Synthroid and weight loss

Good morning,
After several long years I have finally been put on a low dose of synthroid for beginning hypothyroidism. My last TSH levels were 3.550- so I'm on 50 mg. of synthroid. For the most part I do feel a difference, at least with my cognitive thought process, and fatigue and irritability. But, I have yet to lose even a single pound of my 35-40 lb weight gain. I've been on the synthroid since mid September. My dr. told me that they used to prescribe synthroid for obese people to help them lose weight. Does anyone know how long it takes or if I should up my dosage? Thanks!!

I was diagnoised Hypothyroid last March with a TSH at 5.4. My doctor started me on Synthroid and i wasnt feeling much better or losing any weight. After tons of thyroid research, (read Living with Hypothyroidism by Mary Shommon)I asked to be put on Armour thyroid. Synthroid is a synthetic T4 Armour is natural thyroid replacement from pigs but it contains T4 T3 and possibly T1 and T2. My levels improved much faster and I felt much better and after 3 years of trying to get pregnant I was by June so as far as weight loss goes I'll have to wait till I deliver this March.
