Hello All,
Brand new to this forum and looking for others to share thoughts, questions, and advise. Yesterday, I received the results of my bloodwork and was told I had mildly low thyroid function. The doc prescribed 25 mcg. of Synthroid. I'll be picking that up today.
After reading over my lab results, I'm a bit puzzled. I have questions maybe some of you could shed some light on. My Free T4 is .60 (as far as I can tell this is slightly under the normal limits) BUT my TSH is perfectly normal at 1.28. If I have a hypothyroid problem shouldn't both numbers indicate this? In fact my TSH seems to be on the lower end of normal. If I were hypo shouldn't it be high or at least higher than what it is?
This brings me to my second question...so if I start these meds, won't it affect my TSH and maybe push it above normal? Can the meds just target the Free T4 number? Quite honestly I don't really know the details of how the thyroid works. I have a lot of research to do. I'm just thrilled to finally have a diagnosis and can't wait to be free of these miserable symptoms. Which makes me think of another question...these meds balance the thyroid function but what causes an imbalance in the first place (in my case just the freee T4)? Do I need to pursue more testing to figure why my thyroid is not up to par? Or do you just manage it with meds and let it be?
Of course I'll work closely with my Doc (i haven't been referred to an endocrinologist yet). I follow up with my Doc on March 2. I'm sure I'll have a list of questions for her.
Thanks in advance for any input or thoughts you may have.
Lisa (42 year old, not going through peri &/or menopause yet, no other medical conditions to note)
