Thyroid Meds work, But I am not sure

Two years ago, my doc put me on Synthroid. After about a year, I stopped and was doing fine, until now. I have the chills all the time, am tired alot, very dry skin and congested. Last time I was put on the meds, the doc said my tests were normal, on the low side, but normal. Now I am going to be tested again and am not happy that I may have to go back on meds for 1. Something that was showing as normal and 2. Somthing that didn't bother me for an entire year without treatment and now is bothering me again. Are these two things possible with a hypothryoid? Thanks!

Hi Kristin,

Welcome to our board.

What we usually say on this board is that "normal" readings may not necessarily indicate that your thyroid is functioning okay for you.

I have just gone to my FP in the past. I have only had mine tested twice and was determined it was probably an inflamation of the thyroid caused by my recent pregency, so I wouldn't have to be on the meds for more than a year. Now I feel like I am back to square one.

Hi bettachick,

I took them 9 months to hit within the "normal" range on my tests. I am on synthroid as well. I was also told that my dosage will change several times over my life as hormones kick in if I become pregnant, when I start to go through peri menopause and menopause, etc. What may have worked in the past may need to be adjusted to your body's current state. I hope this helped. I know about dry skin and fatigue. I'm 41 and felt like a 90 year old woman for so long. I found that self-education (read every you can find on thyroids relating to hormones) is the best tool to have so that you can ask pointed questions of your endo.
