Hi,

I have had uncontrolled hypothyroidism for a year now ( just getting back to normal over the past month or so) ever since having RAI for Graves. I was just wondering if anyone experiences heart flutters (I don't know whether this is a medical term or not). It's like my heart beats really fast for a split second then I have to Take a deep breath, then it goes. This happens about four or five times a day that I have noticed. I'm not too worried because my next appointment with my consultant is in a couple of weeks and I'll speak to him then. Was just wondering if anyone had the same thing happen to them.

Thanks for reading

Louise

Hi lulu81,

Welcome to our board.

I'm familiar with the term "heart palpitations" and am wondering if that is what you're referring to.

Yes. This is referred to as heart palpitations. It happens when the body has a surge of adrenaline. When your thyroid isn't working properly, the adrenal glands release a surge of adrenaline to keep your energy going. The problem is that the adrenal glands tend to give you surges at inappropriate times, like when you are resting. Most of the time, this is interpreted as a hyperthyroid reaction, but as the research continues, you will see that it is actually a hypo reaction. The hyper reaction is to have generally higher pulse all the time - tacchycardia. Hypo is palpitations.

To be sure, the doctor should do an EKG to rule out any heart problems. Then your maedications should be adjusted. Keep a log of the dates and times of your symptoms and keep researching.
