No TTC for a year after RAI??

I had RAI done last Friday. The endo doc that sent me to the RAI said that I should wait 6 months before thinking about TTC, and if my thyroid levels are stable at that time, then we could go ahead and TTC 6 months after RAI. Well, the radiology doc that did the RAI said no TTC for a whole year. Is that common? I've read everywhere that 6 months was long enough to wait, but he says a year, and I'm bummed out. My dose wasn't even that high...

Any thoughts? Thank you for the responses!

Hi Dasha,

The only thing I can say regarding your question is that I've heard both time limits.

I was told actually that after RAI I wouldn't be able to have children even if TTC. But he said that it would be best to be extra careful for at least 6 months to 1 year. We were very careful and I found out I was pregnant 4.5 months after RAI (big dose). My son was born October 1st, 2006 and is healthy. I'm not advising you TTC by ANY means but so you don't panick my doctor after I was pregnant said that it usually only affects the baby if you have RAI while you're pregnant, but they just say 6-12 months to cover their butts.

Hope that helps.

How much RAI did you have?

I had RAI done almost 9 years ago now. I was told by both the endo to wait at least 6 months, and I don't believe the radiologist told me much of anything.

Thank you for the info, Nicki! My dose was 15mCi of I-131. It seems lower that some I have heard of, and I only had to be away from my family for 72 hours. I am glad that your son is OK! What a relief, I can imagine how scary it was to find out you were preggo so soon after RAI. I have an IUD, so there is a rather slim chance that anything can happen before it's out, but at least I know it will not be the end of the world if somehow some way I get preggo. I am going to talk to my endo doc when I go in for a RAI follow up and see if he can explain to me why he said 6 and not 12 months. I will wait however long it takes, it will just be hard. Would you mind telling me what your dose was?

Thanks again for sharing your story!

this is what i found

"It is important to note, that pregnant or breast feeding woman should never receive RAI for any reason because it may destroy the developing fetus' thyroid. You should wait 6 to 12 months before attempting to get pregnant. If you plan to have a baby, you should discuss your situation with your doctor. Although RAI can pose a risk to your baby's thyroid, radioactive iodine itself does not cause infertility or other birth defects. "
