Question about Hashimoto's symptoms
| Wed, 03-07-2007 - 8:21am |
I am newly diagnosed with Hashimoto's and was needing some reassurance that my symptoms are normal. Is there anyone else out there that can tell me some of their symptoms with Hashimoto's. It would be greatly appreciated!
Kelli

Kelli,
Hi. I was diagnosed as hypothyroid back in Sept 05. Here is a list of my symptoms:
Freezing cold
constipation
never could get enough sleep
dry skin, hair falling out
major muscle aches, including backache, and neck & shoulder cramps at will
foggy brain, memory was bad
swelling in my face
weight gain
I let this go on for months, as I had just had a baby in Jan 05, and was told it was normal to slow down after becoming a SAHM. I was admitted into the ER, and that prompted the thyroid panel. I was put on Synthroid, and found releif within a few months. I was lucky, but it is possible! Good luck!

Kelli,
I also have Hashimoto's and it ultimately causes hypothyroidism which produces most of the symptoms. I looked it up online to get you more symptoms. The first paragraph are actual sypmtoms that I have had or still have and the second set are other possible symptoms.
Nodules, impaired memory, mpaired cognitive function (aka: brain fog- occassional), migraine headache, increased sensitivity to heat and cold, Diminished cardiac output and decreased contractility, sluggish reflexes, dry puffy skin, hair loss(site says: "especially on the face and thinning of the outer third of the eyebrows" however mine is mostly from my head, mild weight gain, slowed metabolism, constipation, fatigue-physical (EXTREME), increased need for sleep (EXTREME), muscle cramps and joint pain, brittle fingernails, irritability (my husband says extreme), thin-fragile or absent cuticles, difficulty becoming pregnant (pre-diagnosed), ood instability (much like being pregnant), decreased libido
Goiters, slowed speech and a hoarse, breaking voice, deepening of the voice can also be noticed, urticaria (hives), a slow heart rate with ECG changes including low voltage signals, pericardial effusions may occur, depression (especially in the elderly), anemia caused by impaired hemoglobin synthesis (decreased EPO levels), impaired intestinal iron and folate absorption or B12 deficiency from pernicious anemia, anxiety/panic attacks, choking sensation or difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath with a shallow and slow respiratory pattern, impaired ventilatory responses to hypercapnia and hypoxia, osteopenia or osteoporosis, paleness, yellowing of the skin due to impaired conversion of beta-carotene to vitamin A, abnormal menstrual cycles, impaired renal function with decreased GFR, infertility, elevated serum cholesterol, acute psychosis (myxedema madness) is a rare presentation of hypothyroidism, poor muscle tone (muscle hypotonia)
Hope that helps!

Liz,
What a coincidence! Your story sounds similar to mine. I actually was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was about 6-7 weeks pregnant with DS in July 2004. I had him 6 weeks early on Jan. 23, 2005. I was told my TSH would return to normal...but it didn't. Then in August I was diagnosed after surgery to remove a suspicious nodule with Hashimoto's and cancer. I was, after radiation, told I couldn't have anymore children. SURPRISE! Isaac (DS #2) is now 5 months old. I am also a SAHM and alot of my symptoms often get dismissed as fatigue from that and chasing after a 2 year old plus a 5 month old.
How are you doing now? What meds are you on?
Nicki
Hi Nicki
You have been through alot haven't you! I am so happy you went on and were able to have another child. What a nice story, I hope it will be mine by the end of this year too. I was on Synthroid for a year, from Sept 05-Nov 06. Pretty much symptom free until Nov 06.
Unfortunatley, my story is still undecided as I am having strange labs, hypo symptoms, and my new Endo thinks I might have a rare disease called selective pituitary resistance (my pit isn't listening to my thyroid so it's not supressing my TSH). I
Isaac was actually a surprise, because we had to use Clomid to get pregnant with our first son, Ian. Docs said after RAI I would definitely not be able to get pregnant. Proof that we are living Gods Plan!
I was on 50mcg Levothyroxin from 7/04-8/05, then from 8/05-9/05 on 50 (I think) Cytomil, then taken off to have RAI where my TSH reached ">150". Since then my dose has just been climbing from 50mcg to now 200mcg Synthroid. I feel like crap constantly. I feel like I have been hit with a truck. I am so exhausted all the time (and both kids sleep through the night), moody, and my hair started falling out about 2 months ago). My last bloodwork was "less than favorable", they suspect a possible recurrence, but wanted to give my pregnancy hormones a chance to regulate post-partum. I go Monday to an endo for more bloodwork and to demand that he try a new or an additional medication to get me feeling like I'm a 22 year old and not an 82 year old. My last TSH was .08. A friend of mine who had the exact same diagnosis about 30 days after mine said she was feeling the same way with adequate TSH and only on Synthroid and her doc added Cytomil to her daily dose and now she feels great. I'm hoping something...anything will work. I am definitely against energy supplements/pills on a regular basis, but I am about to break my own rule and try some because I just can't deal with this too much longer.
What state do you live in? Do you belong to Jan. 05 board?
Feel free to e-mail me directly.
