New Here a couple of Thyroid Questions

Hello,
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in January and immediately put on Synthroid 100mcg/day (yellow pill.) I feel worse than I did before angry/irritable, extremely tired and always eating. I just got the results of my blood tests today to see how my levels were doing and there was no change...they actually told me to start taking the meds. I informed them I did that morning I was there in January and haven't missed a dose. Plus I take it on an empty stomach 1-2 hours before I eat. She was shocked because my TSH was still REALLY high and T4 really low. I am not seeing an Endocrinologist but should I? Do you think I should ask for something more to be done, or just wait a few more months? I just had a baby May 2006 and I have a 2 year old son (3 in May) who will need a kidney transplant in the next year, so I really need a clear head, which I don't have any more.

TIA,
Destiny

Hi Destiny,

See an Endo. I believe it will make a difference. I saw my PCP who for a year said he could treat me. I let him rule my thyroid issues for a year, and I wasn't better and was getting worse. Finally this Jan I pushed him for a referal and it has worked out so much better for me. My new Endo is very patient, and listens to my concerns (this is rare in the endo world from what I hear). While I am not feeling 100% yet, I am functioning as a SAHM to my 2yr old DD. My TSH has always been high, I am on 75mcg levoyxl and still TSH 37. But I also have normal to high T3 & T4, so that's my issue. My labs, as you had mentioned yours, look like I am not taking any meds. It is a lot more berable to have an Endo taking care of me.

Hi Destiny,

Welcome to our board.

I would also agree that you might get more detailed help from an endocrinologist.

Thanks to both of you I see my PCP on Monday and hopefully he will listen and send me to an Endo. Thanks again.

Ask your Dr to check your cortisol level. Science is just starting to increasingly recognize adrenal fatigue as a major cause of symptoms which may be similar to hypothyroid symptoms. Adrenal fatigue happens when our body's stress response gets stuck in overdrive due to the relentless stress that happens in today's world. Our bodies were designed to have certain physiological responses to stress, deal with the stressor, and then go back to a relaxed state. With the stress that we face today, our bodies never get that chance to recoop. Check into adrenal fatigue, and see if your symptoms support that diagnosis. If so, ask your doc to evaluate you for it. Good luck!
