Hi Kelly,

Though I don't have hashi's my 18 year old son does. I can tell you, he gets weak spells occassionaly. Not to be confused with tired. I don't know if you mean generalized exhaustion but sometimes I think thats what he means too. I have Graves but was treated with RAI and am now hypo. I too get weak spells, sometimes I think its just that I'm feeling tired and my body is telling me go lie down or else. I often go to bed early even if my TSH says "I'm within range". I don't know how long you've had hashimoto but I can say this... people with thyroid conditons are so unrecgonized. It seems that unless you are going through it even the doctors say... take synthroid or their med of choice and your done. Which we all know is NOT the case. My family and friends are very sympathetic however, I feel they really don't have a clue what it's like to never feel well or have your hair falling out. My son once told me... he never feels great he just accepted the level he's at. This broke my heart.. he's 18 and feels 3-4 times his age. This is a ever learning condition.... I myself am looking into different solutions, diet, meds etc. Good luck and feel well.

Thanks so much for the encouragement. Like your son, I feel much older than I am and it affects my whole life. What are some of the other symptoms that your son has? What is he being treated with? I don't know anyone else with this so I would just like to hear from real people! Thanks again so much.

Hi Kelli,

My son went through a very rough time before he was diagnosed. At first because of his age and gender, we thought he was at "that" age. He slept all the time (something an adult could not give in to), was very moody, losing his hair, depressed, he would get dizzy spells, constipated, he was a very good student and though his grades remained well, it was because he focused on them and his after school activities 100% and everything else was basically put aside. By the time he was finally diagnosed... it took blood work every 6 weeks for 9 months till the level reached a prime # (at about 1 TSH)A note to remember is everytime he was given a higher dose it would take 5-7 days for (me)to see a difference this good # would last until his 4th or 5th week and I could actually tell his numbers where changing sure enough, he'd get re-checked at the 6 week mark and need an adjustment. This took so much time because the endo changed his doses gradually. Now he has been good for about 8 months and counting.... the only thing he noticed was extreme cold effected how he felt. So when we had a week or so of single digits and below 0 weather he got tired and the cold really bothered him. I mentioned this to the endo and she said that its common and sometimes meds are adjusted for colder weather. Sorry I don't mean to write a book but I thought it was worth passing on. Now... if your not too bored with that :) , I will tell you now that I'm hypo.... when my numbers where very high (TSH 36) I was very emotional, and extremely tired, and charlie horse was my legs friend. Needless to say now that I seem leveled with my TSH at 1.14 I do feel much better however I still get bouts of fatigue. I can't remember if you said your lab #'s, but both my son and me are on synthroid he 150mcg, myself 137mcg. I hope this (book of info) helps you in some way. Also, get the Mary Shomon Living well with Hypothyroidism you will be amazed what you will learn from her. I bought that for my son and her living well with Graves Disease which is what I have. Good Luck and keep in touch... your not alone we all need support from people who really know how we feel. Take Care.
