Explaining surgery to children

My kids are ages 6,5,5,1. I kind of forgot that Trinity started reading so I wasn't thinking when I put "surgery" on the calender. Trinity said, what do you mean surgery? So I started explaining that there was something in Mommy's neck that is causing problems and the surgeon was going to take it out. Her poor little lip came out and she started almsot sobbing.
So then I told them that this thing in my neck was misbehaving, so the surgeon was going to take it out and give it stern talking to, give it a spanking (lol) and send it to its room. Then when they come to visit in the hospital we would have a picnick on my bed with icecream and crackers (the only thing I could think we regularly stock in the hospital fridge on the floor). They were super happy about that and started laughing at the thought of the surgeon spanking something that came out of my neck.
I am bummed though. I'm still nervous about surgery and any outcome other than positive but I have to keep up this brave face for my kids and my dh (who is also nervous). There is no one here that I can talk to about it.
It will be nice to work all this weekend to keep my mind busy.
