Hello!

I had thyroid surgery on the 5th of this month. I have a tightness in my throat. It feels like someones choking me. It comes and goes. I had the left side removed only.

Is this normal?

Thanks for any help.

Hey there! I had mine done on the 2nd as well. The swelling seems to be fairly common. If the swelling is causing too much pressure in your neck where you are having a hard time breathing then seek help immediatly. But otherwise I'm guessing it should go down in a few weeks.

Also, do you have your staples out (or sutures)? I feel better now pressure wise now that he took them out yesterday.

Thank you for you reply.

I did get the staples out the day I left the hospital. I have paper strips now. I called the docotor and he said it's the paper strip and the inflamtion that's causing the choking feeling. The skin is still tender.

I usally have low blood pressure, but since the surgery my bp is 160/103. I told the doc about that also. I told him I stop the pain meds because the pain was not that awful. He suggest taking Motrin for the pain 3 times a day because my body still reacting to the pain and the pain is running my bp up.

We'll see! :)

Keep an eye on that BP though. I would take the motrin and go and take your BP (go to a Walmart or something where they have automated machines if you don't have one at home) and have your BP done regularly so you can see a trend of what its doing. If it stays up you are going to want to give him a call back.

I had the surgery back in 1993 and couldn't wear turtleneck shirts for 2 years!!! It's normal to feel the tightness but it goes away. Just an FYI, your hormones will be all over the place for at least a year. You may feel better but you will REALLY feel better in a year. It's not a "pain" type of feeling so to say, but just not normal. Those hormones that are released during surgery just don't go away instantly. Your body has to release those somehow and it's not quick. It's just a feeling of not being "normal". I hope this helps!!!

I go to see the surgeon May 7th to see on having my Thyroid removed due to my Graves making it hyper and the meds are having a hard time controlling it.
My endo doctor was talking about it all being removed but I don't know what to expect from the visit with the surgeon.
Is there any particular question I should ask?
I'm really not sure what to expect from the surgery or afterwards. I have read some on thyroid removal but still it really don't seem to go that much into details and what to really expect.

I hope you get to feeling better soon from yours. I guess the swelling is a normal thing for the most part from what I have read but I am really getting nervous thinking about having mine taken out.

Really the swelling is the worst part and mine is almost gone. Actually I have less swelling now than I had of a goiter before surgery. I'm gaining a neckline which is nice lol.

If I had to pick this or a c-sec, I would pick this one definalty. Its much easier to recover from.

I'm glad to hear your not having any other problems from the surgery.
I hope all continues to go well and your recovery is a pleasant one. : )
I too would enjoy having my goiter gone and I had read that there would be swelling but that it usually went down rather quickly. Let me know how it keeps going please.
Have they put you on any type of thyroid meds or talked about what they would be giving you if they do?
I have a week to go before my first meeting with the surgeon. Are there any certain questions I should be asking him?

I work with my surgeon almost every weekend at the hospital, so I wasn't afraid to ask him for things. Like when I felt the hypo symptoms coming back after surgery I just asked for a prescription of Armour and he just wrote it out for me. Now I take 60 mg of Armour and feel alot better on that then I did on the synthroid.

I would start by asking the dr if he does alot of thyroid cases. Also ask what kind of tests he wants you to do before hand.

Thank You for your response. How soon did you have the hypo symptoms? What were the symptoms? I'm trying to get my self prepaired for the idea of surgery.
