Hello, new here, but not new to ivillage. I am so glad I found this board. My daughter has been diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. We found out quite by accident actually. I took her in for her 8 year physical at the very end of February, and I had concerns with her probably going into early puberty. Because of those concerns the Dr ran a FULL panel of blood work. The adrenal hormone tests came back completely normal, it was her thyroid panel that did not. Her initial T4 came back at 0.6 and her initial TSH came back at 31. Things started making sense to me. All of a sudden, things made sense. We re-tested her a week from her frst test and I made sure to go at the same exact time. This time the Dr checked her Thyroid Peroxidase Antibiodies. The T4 this time was 0.85 and the TSH was 23.8. So he figured it was a self limiting condition, but the next day her TPO antibodies came back. It was a shock. They were 1794 (ONE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED NONETY FOUR!) WAY above normal (Normal is 0-34!) WOW, he diagnosed her then and there with thyroiditis. We had her T4 and TSH done again a week and a half later. T4 was 0.88 and TSH was 14.7. Still the TSH was above normal and the T4 was low normal. Dr said we should continue to monitor her and that if an any time her TSH went back up and the T4 dropped again, that we would put her on synthroid. Her second TPO antibody went from 1794 to 1965! Well last night I got the call just as I was going into shift report at work (I am a nurse) her TSH went back up to 18 and the T4 went back down to 0.8. So we are starting her on the synthroid today.

I was just looking for a support group to help understand her disorder better, what to expect, to see if some of the things she is doing are normal etc. I know I am a nurse, but sometimes I just have to be a mom and forget all the things I know medically. Besides, I don't have a huge endocrine background!

So looking forwad to getting to know you all

Welcome! I'm a nurse also so its not so bad when we have to go and get advise. Thyroid disease can be really confusing to alot of health care professionals I imagine.

What great news they found it so early! Now she will be able to continue on with her school work and such.

Talk to you soon!

Saying "I can't" is a bad word at my house.-Adrienne
