Goiter with normal levels
| Wed, 04-11-2007 - 10:43am |
I recently noticed a large lump in the front of my neck and have been persuing it. They tell me it is a goiter, large enough to be noticed by other people. However all my hormone levels for thyroid come back in the normal range. I have (and honestly always have had) almost all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. I think they don't take that seriously since it isn't a sudden onset of those symptoms. An uptake scan was done and found a cold nodule which then prompted a biopsy which came back ok. So we are doing the wait and see thing, watching to see if it gets bigger. My qusesion I quess is, is there anyone else out there who has been here. I am not comfortable with the no explaination of what would cause a goiter of this size to grow. Am I right to be concerned? I am thinking now that I may find a second opinion. I am not due to follow up for another month. Should I be asking other questions? Any input would be appreciated.

Hi when2004,
Welcome to our board.
Last year it was found that I have a 3.9 non functioning colloid nodule that pretty much takes up my entire right lobe of my thyroid. Like you my levels are fine, iodine uptake determined it to be all cold, which resulted in a FNA biopsy which came back also fine. I am also in the "wait and see" approach with my dr, that if it gets any bigger, I have to have it removed. How big is your goiter?
Now I don't know the difference between the goiter that you have, and the nodule that I have, but I think they are ultimately the same type of thing. I was told the reason mine formed is because my body for some reason, doesn't think that my thyroid is producing enough of the hormone needed..so the nodule forms to produce more hormone, even though mine is not producing, or absorbing any hormones or else my levels would be off.
Frustrating playing this game, but I'm there with ya.
