Hi Everyone,

I just had my college age daughter tested for a thyroid condition. She has many symptoms such as fatique, weight gain, anxiety, muscle/joint aches etc.. I have Graves and my son has hashi so Im familiar with symptoms etc but we both had elevated antibodies. Here are her results

TSH 2.91 (0.49-4.70)
Free T4 1.39 (0.71-1.85
Total T3 173 (60-181)
Thyroglobulin AB <20.0 (<20)
Thyroid Peroxidase AB 19.7 (TSI 99 (<=125)

To me her TSH could be lower, and I thought her T3 seemed high end of normal but to be honest, I'm still learning about all of this. Could she have a sluggish thyroid without antibodies and if so would they treat it. Thanks for any advice you can send this way.

According to her tests, she looks great. Right where she should be. Keep investigating though. You said your daughter is college age, is she in college? Depression and anxiety disorders can have the same symptoms as well.

So, to answer your origional question though, yes you can be hypo without having antibodies. Sometimes the thyroid just burns out, low iodine intake, among other reasons can make one hypo.

Hi and thanks for responding. Yes she is in college and is very stressed trying to complete her studies so that she may begin her student teaching. Her G.P. just prescribed a anxiety med to see if that helps. I just needed to test her since her brother and myself have thyroid conditions. It's never a dull day !!! Thanks again and I love your name... are you a twin or do you have twins??? Trish

I have one set of twins and two singletons. Its funny how the twins came about really: I was just diagnossed of being really hypo after having Trinity and I was supposed to not take any meds for a month so they could do the thyroid uptake scan (what a long month that was). Well after reading some about hypo I thought I couldn't get pregnant. Turns out two weeks before the uptake scan was done I concieved the twins and didn't know it and had the scan anyway (the dumb dr never did a pregnancy test before the scan). I am blessed they are ok after taking that test.

Was she checked for adrenal function? Stress can put a strain on the adrenals, which in turn can affect thyroid function as well as produce the symptoms you mentioned.

Thats some story! You sure are lucky they are healthy. I tried for my second child for along time and my girlfriend was always telling me to lighten up have a drink whenever I told her I thought I might be pregnant. So when I really was no one believed me and I practically had to show them the results. The sad thing to that was I probably had a thyroid conditon then and it went undiagnosed till my "baby" was 18 years old. I get so mad when I think about it I feel like the doctors robbed me of more children. Thank God for my daughter (21) and my son (18)My husband and I accepted what we had and enjoyed them. I don't know your kids age but enjoy every minute that you can... I can't believe my kids are all grown up. My youngest starts college in the fall :( . I'm excited for him but sad for me. It only figures with all the change going on I would now be hypo myself (graves treated with RAI) but I appear to be leveling off for now. Who knows. My son has Hashimoto he has been relatively stable for about 9 months. So now its my daughters turn to be under the weather. Its never a dull moment. Good chatting with you... keep in touch
