Does the thyroid ever re-start itself?

My son contracted a rare affliction last year at age 17. As a result, he has been on thyroid medication (other than ulcers, this is the only residual effect).

My question is does the thyroid ever start working again? Or will he be on meds forever?

I don't know about things like your son's case. I can only speak for myself. I think it's entirely possible for my thyroid to heal and begin to work properly again. I don't know that it will, but I'm hoping :). But, right now it's all a tangle of which started what - and the end result I cannot guess at.
