Tell me about synthroid (spelling?)

Hi, I've been lurking here a little bit to find out more about a possible problem with my thyroid.
Here's some history. About 6-7yrs ago I thought I had strep throat when I got really sick and it hurt to swallow. It wasn't strep, it was an enlarged thyroid. All my blood tests came back normal so I started doing my own research. I thought it was an infection and finally got someone to give me antibiotics after being sick for over a week with this, they cleared up my illness and lessened the swollen thyroid but it has still been enlarged since then. At that time I was told to just have it checked yearly to see if it gets bigger along with yearly blood tests.
Recently I went to a new dr. (I don't go very often and it's been 3 yrs). Thyroid is enlarged, the one blood test they did is normal. I had them get my old records to see if there's any changes, there aren't. And since I already had the antibody test done they don't see a need to repeat it or do further blood tests.
The dr. (really a physician assistant I saw) talked to an endocronologist who said I can just leave it alone and keep checking it yearly, go see him/her to have a specialist look at it, or go on a low dose of synthroid to rest my thyroid and hopefully decrease it's size. The diagnosis is a chronic enlargement but there is no urgency to do anything about it if I don't want to. It is totally up to me but if I go on the drug it will be for life.
I am not even considering seeing a specialist. My health insurance covers 1 physical/yr and then it's $1,000 deductible so I'd be paying for everything out of pocket. I am sort of considering getting the prescription just because I am sort of noticing it more myself when I swallow, mildly as a afterthought but no problems. But I'm also considering just leaving it alone and wait and see since nothing has really changed and I've had this for so many years.
So I was hoping the experts here could help me out with your thoughts, experiences, and information on this drug and what it will do. Any comments on my condition and what you would decide is appreciated too.
Thanks, Calie

Hi Calie,
Welcome to our board.
I'm not on synthroid so I can't help you with your questions on that.
