Has anyone had acupuncture treatments in lieu of medication? Was it successful? Thanks! I'm doing acupuncture right now but my doctor wants me to start taking thyroxin soon.

I just had a acupuncture treatment today! So, let's keep each other posted. My hypo isn't that bad and was caught early, so I thought that I might as well try it. My insurance covers it and I only have to pay $30. I'm going to continue to do it once a week for a few weeks and then go from there. I'm only on 50 mcg of Levothyroxin.

Hi Kimandkyra,
Thanks for the feedback. My TSH level is at 90.6, T4 is .33,hence the need for meds I guess. I really would like to try any alternative treatment before taking the thyroxin. I don't know how long I should go before "giving in." I will keep you posted on my treatments.

Hi,
I found your post and wanted to ask you a few questions as I am interested in trying acupuncture... I am also hypo and on the same dosage you are (50mcg of Levothyroxin). How is it going for you? Are you still doing it? How often do you go? and where did you find an acupunture that specializes in thyroid conditions or are they trained in all different kinds of problems and when you tell them what's up with you they know what to do? I am just concerened that I will get someone that doesn't know enough and will mess me up. Was it relaxing? I have heard that it doesn't hurt, is that true?
Sorry for all the questions but I want to get some info. from someone that has experience with it before I go looking for someone for me.
Thanks for your help!

I'm sorry that I'm first getting back to you. I guess that I haven't checked this board in a while!

I had 4 acupuncture treatments. I felt great with the first 2 treatments and really thought that I was on the road to getting better. Treatment #3 left me very tired and sluggish. And after treatment #4, I was majorly depressed. I might have been going through a "healing crisis". I don't know. But it scared the crap out of me. So I have decided to stop treatments.

The treatments were relaxing. They did not hurt. I would have kept going if I would have felt better and better. This last episode after treatment just really scared me.

I'm still losing my hair and having some hypo symptoms, so the doctor bumped me up to 75 mcg of Levothyroxine. I'm fine with that. I just want to feel better!

I also met someone who is into natural progesterone cream, so I've decided to give that a try. It might help with my thyroid issues too.

I'll keep you posted.
