This is ridiculous!

Well, my blood test results were still not back yesterday afternoon when I was supposed to see my doctor again, so he rescheduled me for Monday am. Well, today I called the lab myself before I hauled myself back to the office (30 min from my house) on Monday. I asked if I could possibly find out what the #s on my T3 and T4 tests were. They said those tests weren't run b/c my dr didn't ask for them. What???? So, I call the dr and actually got to talk to him. He said he didn't request the T3 and T4 tests because my TSH on my prior bloodwork was normal. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! He said that with me TSH being normal they can rule thyroid out. What do you guys think? Should I "demand" those tests, or is he right?

OMG!!!!!! I am just as frustrated as you are!!!!!! I can't believe that he didn't request all of the tests! I really don't know whether he is right or not all I know is that everytime they have ever checked me they did all 3 of the tests and didn't just check TSH. When I was hyper and now that I am hypo my endo still checks all 3. Maybe someone with more knowledge on this board can help you, but my gutt is telling me that they should be checking all three. I would demand to have all the tests run and explain to him that you feel like cr** and you are trying to get to the bottom of this. It's not all in your head and you are trying to figure out what is going on with you and not having all the tests run is not helping the matter.
I can't believe that he didn't run all the tests after you told him all of your symptoms, who cares what your previous bloodwork came up as, he should be listening to you! I am a case in point I had normal levels in October and then by April I was pretty hypo. Maybe he is out of his element here since he is a gyno. My obgyn found my original thyroid problem when I was pregnant and referred me to an endo. Maybe going to your new internal med. doctor would be a good idea, I don't know, i know the last thing you want is to go to another doctor. All I can tell you is to continue to fight for what you want. You know your body best and don't let them think that you don't.
I am so sorry to hear that this experience has been so frustrating! I wish you some answers and relief soon.
Big Hugs!

Thank you for being so supportive! I too thought he understood that my TSH was normal and was going to check the other tests anyway. Apparently not. Anyway, I see him Monday at 8:45. If I am not satisfied after that I will make an appt with the internal medicine doctor and go from there. I am really tired of going from dr to dr, but if it "fixes" me it will be worth it. Thanks again; I will keep you posted.

I would find out what your doc means by "normal". I went thru 4 endo docs before I found one that understood that there are new numbers for TSH...after reading The Thyroid Hormone Breakthrough: Overcoming Sexual and Hormonal Problems at Every Age by Mary J. Shomon, I now know that my TSH should be BELOW 2. Recent studies have shown that the old values are wrong because women are symptomatic at lower numbers...for all you know, the old numbers for normal might be 3 or 4, well above the new numbers. I had my 14 year old tested for antibodies and so far, nothing. But the first thing I asked was "what was the TSH" It was 1.8, right on target. My mom, sister and I all have hashimoto's hypothyroiditis. That book I mentioned was a god-send after nearly 10 years of not really knowing what to ask, what to demand or how to handle my condition.

Best of Luck!
