I've been lurking here for a couple weeks now and thought i should introduce myself :) i'm 28 yrs old and i may have Thyroid Cancer.  i've had a lump on my throat for about 2 yrs now and when i started to seek medical advice in April 07 (i know, i should have done this a lot earlier!).  My dr. ordered all the routine tests to be done, blood tests, ultrasounds, cat scans, etc... And, the tests confirmed that my thyroid levels are fine, however, there is still a mass that needs to be addressed.  based off the last test, it is somewhere around 5.2 cm (does that sound right? i dont have the paperwork in front of me), and it's grown in size.

I had a FNA done 3 weeks ago, and the endo's office called to let me know that there were some suspicious cells and they were sending the results to the Mayo clinic ( i live in MN) for a 2nd opinion. I got the call from the dr's office on a friday and they said that i need to see my Endo right away, because it doesn't look good. sooooo...come Monday, i see the endo. when he first walked in the office, i said "do i have cancer?" and he said, "I'm not sure." ?????? he then showed me the letter that was sent by the mayo clinic about my FNA results and the dr. that performed the "2nd opinion" is like this world renowned dr that specializes in thyroid cancer.  Per the mayo clinic dr., he said it needs to be removed asap and he still can't determine if it's cancer.

so, i meet with the surgeon next week and when i do have surgery to have the mass and the right lobe removed, they'll test it to see if it's cancer, and if so, they'll remove the left lobe as well.  it's strange to know that i wont know until i wake up from surgery if it's cancer!?!?

i'm doing okay mentally, but i'm extremely anxious as a result and i hate this feeling!! and just trying to live my normal life is kind of hard at the moment too. but i know how treatable this is and i have sooo much support from family and friends, and a beautiful baby and hubby. so that's what's keeping me going here!

i hope to get to know you all as we go through the journey. it feels good to come here and know i'm not alone in feeling scared :)

Hello! I'm in the same boat as you - surgery is scheduled for this Wednesday. My husband's great aunt had thyroid surgery 20 years ago because she had thyroid cancer, and she's still kicking at 78 years old! So just try to remember that this is highly treatable. Write back and let us know when the surgery is scheduled for.

Hi Harmony,

Welcome to our board.

Even though you waited a bit, it's good you're getting this taken care of and it sounds as though you're in good hands.

Harmony,

I was asking about the hospital since I also am in the Twin Cities.

Just curious - did you drive on the 35W bridge a lot?

Oh, you live in the twin cities too? that's cool. :) I live in Eden Prairie, so south of where the bridge collapsed, however, we have friends in St. Paul and Minneapolis, so we'd go across that bridge often. So sad...

What about you? did you travel the 35W alot? I still can't believe it's gone.

No, I don't normally drive in that area anymore so haven't been there in a while.
