I had thyroid surgery on Tues and came home yesterday. I feel very good today and was able to take a shower and woke up 5:30 this morning ready to eat breakfast. It was rocky after surgery with vomiting and low oxygen sat so it took awhile to become stable and go to a room. The next day I felt great so doc told me if I can keep food down then I can go home and was able to go home. The results came back benign but waiting for outside lab in Penn to confirm this being that the nodule suppose to be cystic but it changed to very hard solid nodule. Before having surgery my nodules were cystic so there were no worries now all of the sudden it turns out to be very hard solid nodule with no calsification. Can nodules change all of the sudden or can test make a mistake? Why would it change? I am hoping that it stays benign.

Is it normal not able to sleep at night? Last night I slept alittle but that was it. I stayed in bed just to relax. This morning I woke up at 4:30am took my mother to work and got gauze pad. I tried going back to sleep but not able. I felt alittle jittery last night and was coughing alot like if there was something in my throat-just a tickle. Other then that I feel good. No fever,no swelling,no redness,no chills, just not feeling like sleeping. Is this normal and it will pass in couple days? Should I call my md who did the surgery or my regular md? My calcium level were normal when discharged. Is this just nerves and not known what's going to happen next? Does this mean that reality just hit me and surgery is over? I had hemithyroidectomy. Will the days get better? Is this cause for concern?

Hi rmg175,

You just had major surgery so it will take time for you to get back to feeling normal.

Just to give you a quick update,I just starting to check my e-mail today I was just discharged from the hospital about an hour ago and trying to keep up w/some of my e-mails. I ended up going to the er about midnight Friday/Sat because of not able to sleep,nausea/vomiting,coughing very bad and trouble breathing, they ran some test and my remaining thyroid is working normally, did a chest x-ray to rule out pnuenomia(sp?) and that came back negative. They kept me for observation for 28 hours until my pcp and gastro sees me also my surgeon saw me in the hospital just incase to see the incision to make sure no infection where there and also I was coughing so much and my pcp wanted him to see me to make sure I didn't do anything to the area by coughing too much.It was bad case of brochitis and my gastroparesis flared up alittle. I hve to go for outpatient IV antibotic for 3 more days to make sure infectio is out of my system.I won't be able to go back to work as planned so now I am difinately out another week or two. I go see the surgeon on Tues to make sure things are comming along better. Also he gave me my final pathology report and its benign. I am so happy that the final came back benign eventhough I had alitle setback. Keep you updated on Tues.

Update from my check up from the surgeon office. Everything is going great! Incision is healing nicely. I don't go back to work until Sept 17. He gave me more time off from work as a precaution due to the fact that I work in healthcare field and exposed to very sick patients. Its been a totally different now since surgery. I think life is back on track. Since surgery my energy and appitete has improved. I no longer feel tired and able to stay awake until 8 or 9 p.m now. As soon as I get clearance I will start going to the gym as I never have thought that I can return since being tired all the time. If things progress in time I am planning to go back to school for my R.N. I had to take a medical leave of absence from school when I started getting ill and now if things settle I really want to return to school. I was in nursing school when I became gravely ill and had a hard time with my diagnoses of severe gastroparesis. It has taken over my life but since I got diagnose with thyroid disorder besides gastroparesis I thought that it should not take over me that I should take over it and over come it. Thru message boards it has help me become stronger with my experiences and others experiences, now I want to persue my career as an R.N. I will keep you updated with my progress as I take steps. Thanks for all the help!!! Love:rmg175
