Degenerating ademona

Hello, I am a newbie here with some questions.
First of all, I just turned 42 (in August) had my third child in May. I had middle child in August 05, and first child in April 1988. (Yes, the dates are right! :) )
During my recent annual ob/gyn visit, the gyn discovered a lump on my thyroid. She sent me for an ultrasound (maybe chose that avenue becuase I'm breastfeeding?). Anyway, the ultrasound came back with a 3.1 cm degenerating benign adenoma on the right side, and a 4mm benign adenoma on the left side. Thyroid slightly enlarged, with a finding of a "mild goiter". All of my thyroid bloodwork came back in the normal ranges, in fact, it was pretty much smack-dab in the middle.
The gyn wants me to follow up with my regular dr. in a month to have the lump checked again. She said that sometimes they go away on their own? Is this what "degenerating adenoma" means? Will I need to have it biopsied? She was not very forthcoming with info, and I don't know if this is because I was asking too many questions, or she just didn't have the answers.
Why would this lump grow here if my thyroid levels are fine? I don't understand much of this. The only thing I'm sure of is that she kept making a point of saying that both lumps are "benign". I said, "how can you tell that they're adenomas?" And she said, "
from the way they looked on the ultrasound. They did not look suspicious."
Any help? Advice? Been there, done that?"
Thanks,
Lisa

Thanks for replying...glad you're doing well!
What you said is what I'd read, too, that the only way to tell was to have it removed, that even FNA is not 100 percent...so I dob't know why the dr. left me with the impression of, "Oh....it's benign...no need to worry...just go see your regular dr. for a follow up."
Is the surgery bad? I had a very bad experience with the epidural when I had the last baby...they had to try 6 times. I don't know why. So I'm kind of fearful of getting this anesthesiologist again. I've never had general anesthesia.
Hi Lisa,
Welcome to our board.
My guess is that your gynecologist isn't giving you too much information since that is not an area that she specializes in.
Just wanted to give you all an update......
Went to my dr's appt this am...this was a new doctor.
I asked her what "degenerating" meant, and she said that it appeared on the images that the ademona was beginning to resolve itself. It was turning into a more liquid state.
She wants me to have a thyroid scan, and said if the nodule was hot, we'd just monitor it for the time being, but if it was cold, we'd probably do a biopsy.
