Hi,
Just wondering if anyone here had any opinions on what's going on with my thyroid. A few weeks ago life was great, no worries..........then one night my whole neck started aching (I thought I was catching a virus or something) and then the next morning my thyroid was swollen on one side. I went to the doc and he ordered a thyroid function test (which came back normal) and a CT scan and an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed that I have a solid thyroid nodule on the right side of my thyroid. It hurt when it first appeared but since then it has stopped hurting and it has shrunk in size. I was referred to an ear, nose, throat, specialist who is sending me to a hospital in the city for a biopsy. That's not for two weeks though, and I was just curious if anyone had any theories on why this is happening. Has anyone had a nodule just appear large and painful out of the blue and then stop hurting and shrink in a week? It has shrunk to about half the size that it was, but it's STILL there and I just am freaked out that I have cancer or something.
Thanks for any opinions in advance..........

Hi, I'm no expert, but I would think the fact that it has shrunk would be a good sign. Also the fact that your biopsy is 2 weeks away. If it was really serious, I would think (again, I'm no expert) that they'd get you in asap.
Hope all goes well. I'm sure you'll get a lot more informative posts from others here, but I just wanted to throw those two things your way.

Hi Rachel,
Welcome to our board.
The testing you're going through seems to be pretty standard procedure.
Thank You both for replying and for your thoughts and advice.
Lisa, I thought the same thing as you......that the fact that it has shrunk would be a GOOD thing. Only I haven't had the reassurance from any docs that this means anything. I haven't specifically asked but they haven't said much about it. The ear, nose and throat doc said that it sounded like my thyroid nodule had bled and that was why it had gotten big suddenly. That's just his theory though. I was concerned about the two week wait for the biopsy too.....but the receptionist said that that was the first avilable appt. Two weeks is going to feel like two years! I just want that thing out of my neck regardless of what the biopsy says. If it's not "supposed" to be there then I'd just feel better if it was removed. I hope that it's not anything major and they can just cut it out. Or better yet......maybe it'll just keep shrinking until it disappears!! (Wishful thinking I'm sure)
Thanks again, and I will keep you posted on the results.
