Hi,
Somewhere I read something about avoiding certain food such as Soy, Broccoli? Is this true? Where do I go about learning some of these information that may benefit me and all others. My mother has Hypothyroidism. Doctor says that I have had this for a "Long time" just didn't know it until now. I was Dx back in January when I knew something was terribly wrong. I was extremely tired and had no energy, was freezing all the time, plus my hair was falling out in clumps. My first TSH test was at 11. something...which was High.
I am a medical coder and happen to come across a case of thyroid disease and in that case showed a bunch of symptoms and noticed I had the same thing so I started off some research and told my doctor that I would like a thyroid test.
Doctor sort of brush it off as if it isn't. After the test she called me right away saying "You are right! you are hypothyroid" I actually Dx myself! So I have been on meds. Levythyroixin?? since then and dosage at 50mcg now I have been feeling great until recently I noticed changes. I think it's time for another appointment and check up...might need to up my dosage? Who knows. Been having dizzy spells every now and then, I'm sluggish and tired all the time again.
I am trying to educate myself as much as I can about this. I have a son who's 15 going on 16, should I have him get a test? Since My mother has it, I have it.. it appears to be generic.
Tell me about Diet part of things. I can't take what food? Vitamins? Heartburn meds?? have to avoid that completely??
Help...any info is welcome.

Isn't it incredible how often doctors just dismiss our concerns?
Kelli,
I was diagnosed shortly after my marriage in 1996. I had already gained 65 pounds and had developed (over time) EVERY symptom of hypothyroidism! Because the symptoms came on so gradually and, seemingly, randomly, no one thought to check my thyroid levels.
My mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and her doctor suggested that all of her daughters get tested for this disease. That's when they finally found my hypothyroidism.
Over the years, my thyroid level has finally become stable. You will find that your levels change based on different factors; such as change in diet or activity level. You may also find depression an issue (which I did).
Regarding diet, I did read that soy is not a product that should be used often or in excess for someone with hypothyroidism. There are books on the market addressing our disease, but I would not recommend purchasing any them as I find that each one provides bits of information and no ONE book provides it all. This disease, and too many others, require that you do your homework and participate very actively in your own care.
Good luck to you,
Deb
I was diagnosed about 4 months ago with Hashimoto and put on a low dose of Levoxyl. A friend of mine told me about the Mayo Clinic website that helped her answer some of her questions and it has certainly helped me.
