Radioactive thyroid scan question

What type of machine is used to do the the scan? Is it something like an ultrasound or more of a machine like and MRI or CT? Or something else? I've read that it's a "special camera" or "probe." I'm just curious what to expect.

Thanks! :)

Thanks for the info! My scan is this week, so it will be interesting to see what the results come back with.

I got my scan results...just slightly low-normal uptake but overall the nurse said it was pretty normal. I'm supposed to see my endo to go over the results and pros and cons of treating versus observation.

So it's not Graves or nodules. :) Low-normal scan, low TSH (0.8), normal TSI, normal T3 and T4. Any thoughts as to what it might be?

From the lower TSH, perhaps you are a bit hyperthyroid but don't have the autoimmune diagnosis of Graves' disease.

Endo dr thinks I may have had thyroiditis. I've gone from being hyper to hypo in the span of about 1-1/2 months without having been on any medication. He suggested we monitor my TSH and if it doesn't return to normal he'd want to put me on thyroid hormone supplementation. But he also said that 80% of people with thyroiditis return to normal thyroid function in time on their own. Fingers crossed! :)

Does to scan / camera have any additional risk/ radiation? Is it just the iodine that is radioactive?
