I'M GONNA BE A 'GYM RAT' :)

Well, I haven't told ya'll, but a few months ago, an excellent fitness facility opened in my building, run by YMCA folks, but for employees of my company. It only costs $20 a month...for my needs.

I've been 'flirting' with the idea of joining, but gosh, I've joined so many things like this over the years then dropped out, that I was reluctant to make the commitment.

But.......after weighing in today here @ work, and seeing that my weight, DESPITE all my nighttime activity this week, is back up to where it was in March, when I started F&H ....exactly, as a matter of fact, on the dig scale:(

So.....the weight, in addition to my recent joint problems in legs, now hips, and my feet probs has led me to this workout facility. (The nurse here told me that age + carrying around the extra 10 lbs could be contributing to my pain) Don't know exactly what time of day I'll be doing it....don't think it'll be b4 work. Probably after. But I have several friends here who've said they'll go with me, whenever. There are guys there to get me on the right program for me. And...to help get me off that patch (MAYBE), I'll just run down there when I want a cig and get on the bike for 15 min during a break.

Today was my 2nd visit....tried a few things when it opened. I like the elliptical because my understanding is less stress on my joints...but whew....its a real cardio-workout. Also like this low down to the ground type bike which they use for people with knee probs (works for me). And also like the rowing machine. So that's 3 machines for now. And they will help me with the free weights and teach me all this *stuff* I've been hearing from you younguns. The bicep & tricep stuff the guy showed me today seem hard to learn, and I know you can really mess things up if you don't do them with the correct form.

So....Lily, Amy, Kim, Mel and any other gym rats...please give me any helpful hints to get my metabolism up so that I can get rid of these 10 lbs gained after my nic quit, plus more. Remember....I'm a *beginner* at this in every sense of the word.

Figured you sure can't beat that price of $20 a month, which also includes being able to go to classes like yoga, pilates, step, cardio sculpt, and something called knockout workout. Pretty cool, huh? Well, ONLY if I utilize it...right? ^^Stel^^

Sounds excellent Stel and how cool to have a nurse to consult with about your individual needs.

**Dil has one and uses it because of that. :)

A great bargain Stel and yes, I bet you use it. :)

Good aye Rat!! lol!!! When I started at the gym a few years ago this old guy was doing his thing and I asked him "How long will it take before I can actually breathe freely after a couple of minutes exercise!!" He said "It takes about three months of regular exercise before the endorphines (sp!) kick in." I thought "Yee Gods, that long!" Well, he was kind of right but losing weight comes faster. You have to be prepared to put a little on initially (first couple of weeks) than the muscle tones and builds and if you watch your diet the weight drops. You actually look thinner before you weigh significantly less!!

What a great decision you have made. Proud of ya, even if you talk funny! Hilary

Oh Stel,

That is wonderful! You are so lucky to be able to do that! Have it right there at work .. have friends to go with and have it cost as little as it does! You won't have any excuses now Believe me hon .. I think you just happened on the perfect solution for you! I am very happy for you. You could during a break go jump on the treadmill or something for ten to fifteen minutes and be almost done by time work is over.

Do realize how fortunate you are and yes, YOU will do this

Hey - - you have to try one of those yoga classes - - fabulous for Gentle but Strong workout for bod AND mind.

I'm so excited for you!! Start Gently though. Let me know how that 'low' bike does for your knees - - is it a 'recumbent' bike??

AND, again, 10 pounds is a lot healthier than smoking. You'll do this part too.

Stel--the eliptical is MY personal fave because it DOESNT stress my knees. It is a GREAT work-out and burns more calories than the treadmill. You can do it on different resistance levels also--try going backwards on it--It is a KILLER!!!If i do the treadmill I put it on the HIGHEST incline (15) and basically i am walking up-hill ai 3.5 MPH.Try it w/ 5lb weights in your hands..THAT will make ya sweat!!!As far as machines go--I use a variety--but get help, dont try to do ANYTHING you are unsure of.I really have been a sloth as of late---but now I feel like going to the gym,,,AHHH--too bad its raining so hard--and I cant drive!!LOL!! xoxoxo mel

Thanks for the encouragement, Golly:)

No, no....I don't want any of that 'muscle weighing more' stuff I want 10 lbs gone pronto! LOL Well, *Missy Fellow Fit & Fifty*....pardon me for not including you in on the list of the 'gym rats'. I FORGOT you did that, in addition to playing golf. WOW!!!

I will probably be askin' you a bunch of questions since we are the same age:)

I just want to be able to take a walk and not hurt....and look better in my bathing suit:)

Thanks for your encouragement..I am DEFINITELY hoping those endorphins kick in ASAP!!!!!

Oh, I do know I am fortunate to work for a company that provides this facility for its employees, at such a low cost. When I went to work there 13 years ago, and 35 lbs lighter (grrrrrrr!).....I told my boss who hired me that I was excited to be working for a company that was so *health conscious*. Well, wish me luck...I'm gonna need it:)
