Adopting a new doggie from the shelter!

I hope everyone's Fourth was great! We had a little cookout and went to see fireworks. On the 3rd, we had gone to walk doggies at the shelter. We found a cute little terrier mix, female, a bit short of a year old, still very much a puppy, which had been picked up wandering around by the lake. She is very much in heat -- poor thing -- which could be why she wandered, y' think? Hmm. Or else someone dumped her when she went into heat. Who knows?
I've heard good things about terriers, that they're smart and are good with children. And not too big. This one was not up for adoption yet when we met her, but was to be available on the 5th.
Sooooo, I drove us over a little bit after the place opened on Saturday morning. She was still there, no one had come to claim her. And no one had come to adopt her yet. Of course she had only been available for about half an hour. I was relieved anyway. I was SURE someone would have been interested in her already had it not been the day after a major holiday.
I talked real seriously with the boys again, about whether this was THE dog. At the time, I couldn't imagine EVER finding another small dog like this, young, puppyish, trainable, but housebroken (I THINK), though I know there have been and will be plenty more :(
She's brown and white, short hair, and has a white tipped tail that goes NUTS when she's excited. She's so funny.
We are supposed to be there about noon tomorrow to pick her up, but will probably get there when they open just so we can play. She is already wearing her new collar and has a rawhide chew that we gave her. Can't wait!
Oh yeah, no smoking now for awhile! My last bout of insanity only lasted a day and a half. Yippee!

Golly said,
Thought of you when I heard the weather there. Take care and keep us posted!
However I just read a pamphlet, and it said, unfortunately, that 60% of shelter animals are there because of behavior problems :( I know that could well have been true for our last doggie. The pamphlet said in some cases the behavior can be corrected with lots of attention, and training. I had a feeling this little girl was going to poop on my carpet last night so scooped her up and got her outside. Hard to tell b/c she didn't go. Also she had just come out of surgery :(
I think it was not right for them to make us take her home just a few hours after surgery. She developed a little bleeding, I called that vet and no one was there! The recording said they would not be back in until MONDAY. (Today's Wednesday, right?) Then I called the emergency number and no one was there either. Finally I called my normal vet (shelter sent her to someone else for the spay) and they were right there and gave me a few tips.
I'll NEVER go back to that other place. It smelled bad in there too. And I thought the dog's incision was a little (lot) on the large side for a 15 lb. animal.
I think she'll be ok. The vet told me to keep her in a crate to reduce risk of the stitches opening up and she doesn't like it much but I think it is keeping her very safe.
Also, and maybe especially against my one cat, Prissy! (I call her "Miss Priss" b/c that is what she is!!!) She hates animals! LOL

Hmmm Rusty and Reb. Maybe her name should start with an R. We've thought of everything from Waggles to Angel to Little Orphan Annie. And those are only three out of what, 25 or so names we've come up with. Time, and she, will tell us her name soon, I hope!

Yes, a picture would be nice, wouldn't it? I have no idea how to do that kind of thing, however. I'm an online ignoramous!

About the new "addition" to the family, I did feel a bit like a mother bringing her new baby home yesterday. She is so small! Not to mention vulnerable!

Hi Yogi,
Oh thanks for keeping us up on your new 4 legged baby. I'm glad that spaying is over and that you were able to reach someone. I hope she's a happier camper today but good idea keeping her in a safe place for a few. That will give her time to adjust too. OK now for some naming fun for the three of you! Like you, I'm sure she and time will provide her name. :)
Gosh it's nice to have you posting and with such all around good news. I'm so happy for you. :)
