Exercise question

I am hoping someone can give me some suggestions. I joined a gym 6 months ago, and go on a regular basis, about 3 or 4 days a week. I do cardio and weights. Before I joined a gym, I used to jog, but not as regularly. I usually go after work, and then on Saturday mornings. After coming home on weeknights, though, I feel exhausted, like I have the flu. I keep hearing that exercise is supposed to give you more energy, but for me, it is making me exhausted. I drink at least 32 oz. of water while I am exercizing over the course of an hour. I am 25, and get regular amounts of sleep. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi there - -

welcome to the board. Gotta tell you I don't know what's wrong....sometimes that kind of thing comes along maybe there's something else going on that is killing your energy. Is the weather a bother to you?? Sometimes I have much more trouble being active when the humidity is high and it's in the 90's.

The one thing I will suggest to you is that next time you are at your doc's office, you might ask about getting your thyroid checked.....I'ts probably nothing, but I have hypo and one of the symptoms is exhaustion...particularly after working out. It's a simple blood test.

Check back, some body else might have an idea for you. We are a great bunch of gals interested in getting fit and healthy and we'd love for you to stick around and post.

Lots of luck that things get better for you.

hi:

Well, I used to workout 4 days a week cardio/weights for 1 1/2 hrs, that seemed to work fine for me! But on monday I got a trainer, so i spend 2 1/2 hrs at the gym. I do lots of cardio and weights and abs! Yesterday all I wanted to do was to sleep, I did!! I went to bed at 9pm and got up at 9am today. I think it is pretty normal to want to sleep, I am not used to that much activity. This could be happening to you!

I think it could be several reasons...

your not eating healthy - you could be needing some protein! or

your doing too much cardio (thats very exhausting -makes you want to go sleep)

I think you are fine after a long day at work then working out! WOW!!

Yeah, sometimes when you work out you feel more energy - but if you do cardio you tend to get more tired and sleepy! You can get used to it and starting feeling better after a couple of months (in case you increased your cardio).

But it wouldnt hurt to check with your doctor, if things keep going like that!

Good luck!

Hi ritousbabe,

Great to have you here and welcome to the board. I'm sorry you're so tired after exercising. We always recommend when in doubt to check with your Dr. as, if nothing

else it can relieve your mind. :)

You're drinking your water and alternating your exercising. Are you getting enough calories? How's your diet?

I've read that even moderate exercise can deplete a woman's iron supply and of course in this hotter weather, important minerals could be lost too?

That's all I can think of but perhaps others will have other ideas.:) Hope you stay around and join up with us on our journey to get fit and healthy.

Welcome ritousbabe~

"They" say that working out in the morning or early afternoon is best because your energy level starts to go down hill as the day progresses. When you're working out AFTER work, you're working out when your body is getting into it's "rest mode."

Do you notice a difference when you work out Saturday mornings?? Are you less tired afterwards??

Look forward to seeing you around more often! This board is GREAT!

Much love,

Hi ritousbabe and welcome,

Glad you stopped by here! You certainly sound like you are doing very well with your exercise program.

As for your tiredness .. anything you are doing differently? Perhaps the heat is getting to you .. if it's hot where you are .. Maybe you need more water .. Has this been happening for how long now .. How about if it persists .. call and ask your doctor.

They may have some good suggestions. In the meantime, do be careful, take it easy!

Hope you'll come back and join our *fun* as we travel the road together to get *Fit & Healthy Remember, the more the merrier

In this hot weather she could be depleting electrolytes--In this weather (at home not here--it is only in the hi 60s) I add a little gatorade to my water to replace the electrolytes (that's why football players drink it). She should also make sure she is alternating her weights--those muscles need a days rest at least. She could be overdoing it if she is just starting out--it has to be one step at a time (I found that out the hard way). Yes she should talk to her doc but also a trainer at her club!!!!

Thanks to all for great responses. I also spoke to my mom about it last night. She doesn't think I have hypothyroid.. she thinks I'd be overweight if I did.. I think perhaps after working a long day at work, my body is simply tired and that could be it. I don't feel as tired when I work out early on the weekends. But I also don't eat anything after lunch, then go to the gym at about 5:30 or 6. I am going to try to eat my Luna protein bars before I go and see if that helps. It is extremely hot here, too. in the 80s and 90s, and I know that it not helping things, but they have the A/C on in the gym. I have been going since January, but nothing has changed the entire time. I have been waiting all this time for my energy to increase, but it hasn't. I will talk to my trainer, and possibly my doctor. I have a check-up in 2 weeks. I do also like to drink the gatorade-type drink called smart water. It has electrolytes, but no carbs. I drink those during the day, but not when I am working out. I will try that instead.

Thanks!

Hi Christina,

Sounds like you've got some ideas on what it could be and definitely skipping lunch and then working out/running would certainly be tiring. Our bodies take a certain amount of calories to just to keep going (even sleeping-smile. For me, it's 1,200. If you're not getting enough, it could make a big difference. Also, yes on when you do it.

Yay on you wondering this just before you have a Drs. appointment so that you can have your questions ready. That worked out well. :)

Good luck and let us know how it goes. :)
