Hi Mary - - everybody is different. I have heard folks say they might gain weight, but I know of nothing that proves that....I don't gain because I take a vitamin, I gain because I eat more.

Anyhow, My personal feeling is this: take a good multi-vitamin - - unless your doctor says to - - try to get one WITHOUT iron. Iron is something that you should only take extra of IF your doctor says so.....Men especially should NOT take iron as they can not get rid of it (women lose some iron when they have periods.). So, make sure hubby's pill does Not have iron. My hub takes a "senior" vitamin - - you do not have to be Senior to take it - - it has all the right vitamins. I take a children's vitamin for the general b-vitamins, then I take a 500 C vitamin and some other 'extra's . I DO believe that taking a simple multi-vitamin HELPS to prevent some colds and in general provides the vitamins and minerals that we don't always get Daily.

If you eat a balanced diet and you don't have any noticeable ailments, then extra vitamins are not really necessary. If you feel you are lacking something and looking for a good vitamin, then here are a few tips from some of my buds "in the know."

1. Make sure it doesn't contain anything artificial (dyes, preservatives, etc). They can inhibit absorption in some cases.

2. Buy the book, "Prescription for Nutritional Healing". You can find it at almost any health food store, including chains like GNC, and all major book stores. If you have any ailment from in-grown toenails to cancer to herpes, this book gives you a guide for eating and important vitamins, herbs, etc. It may be necessary to make certain lifestyle changes rather than overload yourself with stuff you body won't absorb.

3. Finally, once you have chosen a multiple take one (as long as it's not in capsule form) and drop it into a cup of warm, not hot, water. Wait 15-20 minutes. If the vitamin hasn't dissloved in that time then it won't dissolve in your system fully either, i.e. you won't absorb most of the contents and end up sacrificing it to the toilet God. Not something one wants to spend their money on.

Hi Mary,

I see Tracy has done some research. Thanks Tracy. I don't seem to gain weight on vitamins.

I take a vitamin for seniors in the winter. During the summer I just take calcium and glucosomine and try really hard to get in a balanced diet.

**Such a great question Mary!

While I think everyone is different and ususally has different needs ..

One place to start would be by asking your doctor and/or pharmacist.

There are so many out there you know ..

If you are lacking somewhere and looking to supplement then that would allow you to make up what you are lacking ..

However if you are just wanting to take to feel better overall ..

Look around and see what all is offered. Some good *daily* ones around.

I have not heard anyone ever say they have gained weight from taking vitamins.

Like Tracy said and is true .. perhaps from eating alot but not from the vitamins ..

Good luck hon and let us know what you decide :)
