I need a list of reasons...

For me to quit smoking 100% for good. I have been a sporadic, situational smoker for 10 years. Stress, craving it after I've consumed a little bit of alcohol, and the fact that I simply enjoy the nicotine buzz each time I light up (It only averages about 4 cigarettes per day) have kept me from saying a permanent "ADIOS!" to this disgusting habit. So what I could really use from everyone here are reasons, other than the obvious health issues, for me to kiss this all good-bye.

Hello Sliver, four cigarettes a day! Couldn't say if that is actually so bad considering the pollution etc. we all breathe but "the obvious health reasons" are the reason why if you are lucky enough to be able to give up the cigarettes you should. Let alone the expense! and have you heard the expression "Kiss a non-smoker and taste the difference!"

I HAD TO SIT AND WATCH MY DH AFTER THEY HAD ALMOST CUT HIM IN HALF TO REMOVE HIS KIDNEY AND A COUPLE OF OTHER THINGS. I CAN'T TELL YOU WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO SIT AND LOOK AT SOMEONE YOU LOVE IN SUCH A SHOCKING, HORRIBLE STATE - JUST BECAUSE OF BLOODY CIGARETTES.

So, sorry for yelling Sliver but don't muck about with them. My dh has survived this nightmare for now but I just can't understand why, if you have the choice (and not everyone does, it is an addiction) you don't just give them away. Hilary

Yay on thinking about wanting to quit. That's a first step! :)

There's so many reasons. For me it was freedom...freedom from craving those darn things every hour or 1/2 day, freedom to travel or enjoy a good dinner without searching for a place I could smoke. That's the main reason I battle the demon (nicodemon lol).

:::sigh::: wish it were a habit but for me, it's an addiction to fight every day and just one will have me craving another just like that.

I found this on http://www.coolnurse.com/smoking_quit.htm:

Cancer Risk!!! - Lung cancer kills more women than breast cancer every year in the U.S.

MONEY! It’s expensive (over $1000 a year for a pack a day, an estimation, it can be more)

Bad breath -- others do smell it

Stained teeth and fingers

Cough/sore throat

Breathing problems

Fatigue

Wrinkles (more, sooner than people who don't smoke)

Arguments with parents, friends who want you to stop smoking.

Heart disease risk, including heart attack, no you’re not too young.

Gum disease risk

It stinks up your clothes, hair, skin, car, pets, it goes on and on...

Cigarette burns on your clothes or in the house, car, wherever

Risk of second hand smoke to people around you (and your pets too)

Nonsmokers don’t like kissing smokers. There is nothing sexy about smoking.

Hello hello!!

Everyone here has posted great reasons to quit smoking. It has been 4 years since I quit smoking. Did it cold turkey!! So did dh the same day. (It was a bit chaotic at our place the first couple of days LOL) After you quit smoking, you will feel so much better mentally and physically. Everytime you want to buy a pack, put the money away and save it for a great vacation or christmas or something. It's better than buying cigs that are going to make you feel awful in the long run. Plus, have you ever seen the lung of a smoker!! Yuck!

My grampa smoked for many years. His nails were very yellow. His teeth were decaying and yellow. As he got older he suffered from pneumonia frequently. Just a couple of months ago he died of lung cancer. I do hope you quit.

Quiting smoking is one of the hardest things to do. If you can quit smoking, you can do anything. Even after you quit, you will still have cravings from time to time. Being able to have control and not give into the cravings is so much more satisfying than to just give in.

Good Luck!! Keep us posted!!

kinda related, but not really....

I live in Indianapolis, and yesterday a box truck blew up on the interstate. I was a paint truck, and 13 people were riding in the back. Well, one not so bright person decided to smoke in the back of the truck with the paint and paint thinner. Flammable fumes were in the air and the truck exploded. The people in the front of the truck were ok, but the people who were trapped in the back all went to the hospital in critical condidition with 2nd & 3rd degree burns on them, and one died this morning. Very sad.

Also, DH's coworkers mother smoked and had to go to the hospital with burns because she fell asleep while smoking and caught her bed on fire.

Hi, there. Well, my goodness, I don't think you could have gotten better reasons

ANYWHERE than what you have gotten right here. Those were fabulous!

You just gotta want to quit more than you want to smoke. That's all there is to it.

Ha! Listen to me...the SUPREME expert....NOT! But I do know how hard it is.

I don't know how old you are, but believe you me, the sooner you do it, the better.

The more years of addiction, the harder it is to lay them down...FOREVER!

C'mon Sliverpink...join the club of those of us fighting Nicodemon! The more the merrier!

Our motto is: WE ARE TUFF, WE DON'T PUFF!

**stel** P.S. Jag, a belated Happy Birthday to you LAST Wednesday:)

Thanks for the link!

Hi sliver,

I see many have listed excellent reasons here for you to quit smoking now.

Just for your own information ..

Many of us here have quit and we use to have our own board for it ..

This is now a dual support board

We actually have two people getting ready to quit on the 4th ..

It is hard to do, no doubt about it .. It is an addiction, plain and simple!

Nothing easy about the quit ..

however if it is something you want bad enough, you will do it.

Please know we are all here to help any way we can ..

Give you as much support as you want ..

Again, many of us have btdt and know exactly how you feel and how you will feel ..

So .. Let us know how can can help, and what you decide :)

~Hugs~
