It only affects Windows XP or Windows 2000, so I'm OK cuz we've got
Windows ME. According to the guys here at work today, its ALREADY hit...
they don't think anything is gonna happen more on the 16th. Its already
hit our office.
But.......like I said, unless you have the 2 Windows applications above,
you're A-OK.

the Internet. This virus goes by different names including W32/Blaster
and W32/Lovsan. This virus is exploiting a problem with Windows 2000 and
Windows XP which usually results in causing the computer to
automatically reboot when it is connected to the Internet. Various
error messages may appear on the screen, some of which may mention "RPC".
According to Microsoft, the best solution to this problem is to make
sure your computer has the patch installed. However, most of the
customers we have tried to help cannot download the update from
Microsoft quickly enough, and the computer reboots before the update has
finished. This virus is very new, so we are trying to solve the problem
using the best information that is available to us.

This in an email from my DSL team. In an earlier email, they said it has affected millions of computers all over the world. So it is pretty big. I am on ol' Windows 98 so I am ok. This email listed a number of ways to help, well ok, I might as well go back and get that. Just a minute --
We are offering the following options to assist you with the virus:
Download Files
-----------------
We are placing two tools on our web page for you to download, if you are
able. These include:
1. The Microsoft security patch that will protect your computer from
getting the virus
2. A program that can remove the virus from your computer
Both of these tools can be found at http://www.bluemarble.net/virus/.
If you unable to stay connected to the Internet long enough to download
these files, you might try to find an unaffected computer where you
could download the files and save them onto a floppy disk. Then you
could take them to your computer and install the security patch and run
the virus removal tool.
Pick up Files
-----------------
For customers who are unable to stay connected long enough even to
download the files, we are providing these same files on floppy disks.
They are available for you to pick up at our Jack's Defeat Mall office
in Ellettsville located at 5015 W. St. Rd 46. We will also provide an
information sheet with instructions on how to install the security patch.
If you are unable to get to the office in Ellettsville, your only option
at this moment might be to contact a local computer repair store for help
with this problem.
After installing the security update, we strongly
recommend you do the following if you haven't already:
1. Obtain anti-virus software and install it on your computer. Keep
your virus information on your computer current.
2. Run Windows Update periodically to make sure your computer has all of
the important security patches installed.

For any customers who have called Technical Support about this, or any
other problem, and have not received a call back, we apologize. The
call volume yesterday was extremely high due to this problem. If you
had a problem that is not related to this virus and don't receive a call
back today, please call us again and we will do our best to help you.
That's all I know -- good luck!!!

Gosh YB,
That was really interesting! Thank you for that info.
Hopefully it's about over and everyone is patched and protected.
