well, my ds has been in try-outs allweek for high school football.there are other kids who are older, bigger and into their second year,,so OF COURSE thay will be first string--WELL NOW he wants to QUIT!! ARRRGH--after all i went thru for him to try-out.All the kids "make the team" but not all PLAY. And he will have practice 5 nites a week for 3 hours.I told hom " No way are you quitting yet".He needs to bite the bullet on this one for awhile..what sucks is he is tall but thin--has more of a basketball body..but time will tell. AND tonite I have to go to his other PAID league and tell him hes quitting..which i dont mind cuz the coaches are TERRIBLE on his new team and one coach brings in 5 black kids from the projects so they can play and pays NO attention to the kids who have been in this league for YEARS!!!So..The first game is this saturday..they wont have him, but i am relieved because they are playng a really big tuff team and risk of injury is high. Better safe than sorry.. So i guess I paid $180.00 for a jersey he will never use basicallY!!!--sorry,just venting...mel

Mel, I don't have kids, much less teens, but I hear you loud and clear. My mother went throught the same thing with me before I found my athletic niche. I had always played 3 sports a year, but I made her CRAZY when I switched from field hockey to soccer in 10th grade. I put her through the wringer with new equipment for it, and then got cold feet and wanted to quit because I was challenged athletically for the first time in my life - I had never played soccer before. My mother gave me the last say in it, but said that if I quit because it gets hard I'll just turn into an adult that quits when things get tough - maybe do that to my family someday. Long story short, I stuck it out AND went on to play Division I in college. Sometimes you learn the most when you're on the bench - you learn how to fight NOT TO STAY THERE!

Unfortunately that was one of the few instances where my mom was reasonable.

I agree with Sliver that it's smart to make him stay on the team. If he quits when things get hard or because he can't have his way, he will be a quitter when he is an adult.

Like we always say on this board; "Baby steps." ;o)

>>>which i dont mind cuz the coaches are TERRIBLE on his new team and one coach brings in 5 black kids from the projects so they can play and pays NO attention to the kids who have been in this league for YEARS!!!<<<

**Don't mean to rain on your vent or anything, but shouldn't "project kids" get a chance too?? It may help to make the *TEAM* better! There's no "I" in "TEAM" remember?? :::wink:::wink ;o) ;o)

Much love,

Good. I hope you tell him that. It's amazing how much I learned about myself through playing sports. Here's a synopsis of a pep talk (a.k.a. reaming) that my soccer coach gave me when I said I was doing my best. You can manipulate it to fit your son's situation.

me: "I'm sorry! I'm doing the best I can! I've never done this before!"

him:"I don't give a @#$% about your best!!!!!!!!!!! The second that bull @#$% comes out of your mouth you've put a limit on yourself AND your team!!!!!! Now get your @ss out there and shock yourself!"

-I thank him every day I attack something difficult HEAD ON!

Hey Mel,

It's hard when the kids don't get what they *want*

However after paying for it ..

We always tried to tell our boys that quitting is not the right answer ..

You will let the team down as well ..

Good luck on this one hon :)
