AARRRGGGHHH! I'm in pain today! :-( On Sun, I laid down on my back on the floor to stretch and I got a major pain in my neck that shot down my back. I've felt it ever since. Monday I was still sore, but felt better towards the evening, but this morning I am VERY sore, and I can kind of feel it down my back, underneath my left shoulder blade, and goes down almost to my butt. It mainly just hurts when I turn my neck or look down. I have no idea what I did to myself! Any idea what muscle I pulled? I can't believe I did that just from stretching. I don't know if I should just let it heal or see a dr or chiropractor or what.

:-(

>>AARRRGGGHHH! I'm in pain today!

Oh Hillary!

Darn, I'm so sorry!! Does a heating pad or ice pack and some advil or alieve help at all?

If the stiff neck is interfering with your life/sleep I think I'd get it checked out simply because it can be so wearing. Last time dh did that his Dr. gave him some muscle relaxants-lol, he felt no pain with them.

I'm really leary of crunches because of that kind of thing and try to do very gentle stretches. You take it easy, k and thanks for sharing.

You didn't pull a muscle. It's sciatica. Your sciatic nerve runs from your hand, up your arm down your back to your hip. Any false move and you throw the whole thing off. It can be aggrivated by tense muscles surrounding it. The only fix for this, my dear, is a chiropractor or acupuncture.

Great...I was hoping it was just a strained muscle. I don't have any tingling or anything, so that's why I didn't think it was a nerve.

I'll give my chiro a call and let him decide if I should stop in.

thanks!

Trust me, it's best to take care of it right away. If you wait your whole body is thrown out of whack. You're doing the right thing. Glad I could help.

Actually sciatica is something different, from back.com:

"Sciatica refers to pain that begins in the hip and buttocks and continues all the way down the leg. This condition is often accompanied by low back pain, which can be more or less severe than the leg pain. The term "sciatica" indicates that the sciatic nerve, which travels from the lower back through the buttocks and into the leg, is thought to be the cause of the pain in this condition. True sciatica is a condition that occurs when a herniated lumbar disc compresses one of the contributing roots of the sciatic nerve. This type of low back pain is less common than other causes and conditions that produce back pain."

The deal is still the same--this is a nerve thing, and nerve things need help! I spent the morning with my own chiropractor because I haven't been able to lift as much weight lately (atypically weak triceps--my upper back was all out of whack).

Your chiropractor will know how to fix this for sure! Don't wait! Back injury doesn't always show up right away, and the pain can lurk for months before it shows its ugly face.

Good luck!

Thanks, I was reading on sciatica myself, and I'm not sure that's what my problem is, since my neck is what's mainly affected. And I don't know if it's a nerve thing either cause I have no tingling anywhere, just soreness, which makes me think I just strained a muscle. But I made an appt for tomorrow, so the doc can figure out what I did!

thanks,

Hillary

Gentle hugs hon. I think you're smart to get it looked at and see what's up. It probably is *just a strain* but when it comes to the back/neck area, always better to be safe I think. Will be thinking positive thoughts. Do let us know. :)

You don't have to have tingling for it to be nerve compression, sometimes it just shows up as PAIN or muscle weakness. It's definitely spine-related, though, from the sounds of it. I don't get shooting pains any other way! lol... A misaligned vertebra can tug on a muscle and make it unhappy, which can cause inflammation, which can put pressure on nerves, and inflammation causes stiffness because the area fills up with blood, it turns into a vicious cycle. If it still hurts, you might try icing it (no heat!! That brings more blood flow!) for 20 minutes at a time every hour, sometimes that can take the swelling out of it and relieve some of the pain.

Glad you made that appointment! :D Good luck tomorrow...

Oh Hillary,

So sorry to hear this hon! Hope you're feeling better by now.

I personally have no idea what muscle it was ..

I'm sure others here will be able to give you some idea..

If all else fails go to the doctor if it doesn't get better soon ..

Let us know how you're doing hon :)
