Hey ladies! hope you all had a great labor day weekend! I had a lot of fun...lost a little of my voice so it's been rough talking to everyone today..lol...

anyway...a few months ago, one of the girls I work with at the gym was talking about tofu and I've been wanting to try it out since but just haven't gotten around to it. I finally looked up some recipes online today but I was wondering if anyone here is into the organic food thing. My first step was drinking soy milk and I love it. I actually didn't know what tofu was until today so I want to start educating myself more on this whole thing. If anyone has any tips I'd love to hear them!

thanks

kim :)

YUCK! Not me on either(:

But I've seen other *regulars* here post about both...so you're bound to hear something

soon, Kim. Actually, Barb is probably our most 'organically inclined' but she's on

vacation this week. But Tracy is our new 'cooking queen', and she USED to do the soy

thing until she found out if was bad for her thyroid condition.

Anyway, good luck! * stel *

Hey Kim! Love that soy milk!! I haven't eaten tofu - - but I hear it takes on the taste/flavor of what you cook it with. I used to love soy stuff tho - - (as STEL reported!LOLOL) - - - I practically lived on Boca products - - they have deLISH burgers and sausages made of soy. Soy is supposed to be helpful in lots of health issues, but, a word of warning, if you have thyroid condition, it May not be a good idea to eat much soy. But, everything in moderation is the safest way.

Eat some soy for me!(lol)

Hi Kim,

I use Tofu mainly in stir fry dishes and treat it just like I would anyother tender veg. I cut it up in 1" cubes. It's also good in clear soups I think.

It mainly picks up other flavors, I couldn't even tell you how it tastes plain. I know people who do use it as a meat substitute. I've never tried it fried but hope to someday as I've seen it offered. Good luck and enjoy. :)

Done it, eaten it, enjoyed it! My personal favorite way to eat tofu is marinated in teriyaki sauce or with garlic. It doesn't take long to marinate, but if you're not used to the texture, cut it up into smaller pieces. If you're going to stir fry it (or just fry it), you might want to squeeze the water out of it, if it's the water-packed kind. You'd wrap whatever you're going to use in a couple layers of paper towel, cup it between your hands, and squeeze it evenly until you get a bunch of the water out. Then it can soak up marinade and when you're frying it you can actually brown it without adding extra fat. I stir fry it with thawed frozen vegetables over rice or noodles. Something else I've done is to bread little cubes (seasoned bread crumbs) and fry it in garlic and a little olive oil and include it with a marinara sauce over pasta. Probably the most ingenious thing I've done with it is to substitute it for some of the ricotta cheese in homemade ravioli--it's really simple to hide in a lasagna.

Besides some people with thyroid problems, women with a history of breast cancer need to watch their soy consumption as well. I've got my own hormonal issues that are actually made *worse* by too much soy, but I can still eat tofu every now and again.

Good luck, just play around with it! If you like miso soup, you can put cubed tofu in that and don't forget about pad thai!

Hi judie rae, :)

**Yum, I know what I'm buying tomorrow. :) I buy the kind that has rather a dry texture so that really I don't have to squeeze the water out though.

So funny because they were showing a Japanese soup on the food channel and it looked so good and colorful. And about 2 cups of dice sized pieces of tofu for it. :)

Thanks for the good suggestions judie rae. I think it really is just another good food. :)

I go to the health food store where they serve a tofu-salad..it is crumbled and mixed in w/ parsley, chopped red onion ;carrots, herbs and garlic.IT IS GREAT! Also if you like THAI food have a traditional thai dish called PAD THAI. It has rice noodles, green onions, tofu, ground peanuts in a spicey ginger sauce. It is good. another way to try tofu is at any chinese restaurant..most of them offer a dish called Vegetable delight which is assorted veggies and bean curd (tofu) in a delish sauce. I get it to go a lot! mel
