The Best Time To Exercise

Is there a perfect time to exercise? How can I make sure I get the most out of my exercise program? Should I exercise before I eat? After I eat?

These are questions I am frequently asked. All of us wish to get the most benefit from the exercise we do. So, what is the answer?

To some degree, the answer depends on the individual. Some people are early birds who like to exercise first thing in the morning. Going out for a walk, jumping on the treadmill, popping an exercise tape into the VCR jump-starts their day.

Other exercisers take more time to warm-up to the idea of exercise. They find it easier to fit in fitness midday rather than first thing in the morning. Lunchtime workouts can also be great stress busters and set a positive tone for the afternoon.

Afternoon exercisers may use their workouts to ease the transition from a hectic day at the office or with the children to a calm dinnertime hour.

Evening exercisers report that after dinner is when they feel they have plenty of energy and uninterrupted time to do their physical activity regimen.

There are circumstances where the timing of exercise can make a difference. Individuals with heart disease may be instructed by their doctor to avoid exercising vigorously after eating a meal. Someone with diabetes needs to consider their blood sugar level and the medications they take when scheduling exercise.

For most of us the best time to exercise is the time we are most likely to do it! Knowing whether we are early birds or night owls or something in between will guide us in scheduling our physical activity. So, get out that calendar and a pen and make an exercise appointment with yourself and don't forget to consult your doctor before starting any program of exercise.

**Thanks Stel ..

It is true .. one must exercise when it works for oneself ..

And of course we all know everyone is different, hence different schedules.

There is never a right or wrong time .. it's just what works.

Thanks for this share :)

Thanks for finding this Stel. :)

It seems I've read so many different articles, studies etc. that some things have just become a part of me and I don't remember all the *sources* of what I feel works for me. ;)

I do know early morning exercises are not my bag .

Hey Stel, your cubicle should be really rocking next week at work

>>and don't forget to consult your doctor before starting any program of exercise.

**This is such important advice. My heart really does "behave badly" and I made sure just what I could or could not do before hitting the gym. I am lucky, my heart is fine but sometimes I watch others in the gym and just wonder if they are doing the right thing. Even young people, unlike yourself Stel ;) should get themselves checked out. Seriously, do you think the 10 lb weight loss comes from drinking less wine, as you have mentioned you have bee doing since your guys were away, or could you please tell us who are still on the neverending plateau what changes you HAVE made.

>> from drinking less wine

**I never really did drink THAT much wine Stel but I did drink one to two/three glasses most days of the week depending, (oh, and the odd bottle lol!!) and now I don't. I drink water!, tea in the morning and occasionally for a "treat" 'cause it brings on hot flashes, very strong black coffee. I think I have had about two glasses of wine over the last few weeks.

YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY I AM LOSING WEIGHT STEL.....SIMPLE.........I AM HAPPY!!!! Why am I happy, well, suffice to say that I am, and that is enough!

I am eating a lot less, exercising a lot more and spending time here where even though we muck around a bit ;) we talk diet, health and fitness most of the time. It really does make a difference.

>>yet you CONTINUE to torment me ~ LOLOL

**Of course I do Your Aussie Mate ;) Pesky Girl!!!

Excellent answer, Hil:) I appreciate your input...really, all joking aside!

Just curious about the wine is all, as I have my almost nightly cocktail or 2 of CC & water (hello? see my mixer IS water), as drinking in moderation is supposedly *a healthy thing for us women, so I read*. But again, perhaps if I cut it out of the diet, I might lose some pounds:) Hmmmmmmm.......

**My two cents worth Stel ..

Not necessarily so to cut it out completely ..

See where else you could maybe cut from ..

An occassional drink is not the worse thing in the world .. again JMHO of course :)

**sometimes it is an absolute necessity <>

Here they say up to two standard drinks a day and two alcohol free days a week is the way to go. Hilary
