I got back from Vegas on Sunday night and now I'm at the highest weight that I've been at in about 5 years...I have 38 lbs. to lose to reach my goal. No diets are in my future, but how can I eat in moderation? I don't eat that bad most of the time but I just eat large portions. Any ideas on how to change that habit?

I am also starting back at Curves tonight to get back into some sort of routine.

I know EXACTLY how you feel...I'm the same way. My suggestion is to use a smaller plate ~

that is supposed to help.

Portion size is a very big problem nowadays, especially in restaurants. One hint I read recently, was to go ahead when they bring your meal & request a 'to-go' box. Put 1/2 of the meal in the box, and voila...another meal for the next day:)

I'm sure others will have more suggestions. Good luck! * stel *

Hi newlymarriedneedhelp :)

WB from Vegas! It's not surprising you gained a little weight in Vegas with all it has to offer. ;D

>>I am also starting back at Curves tonight to get back into some sort of routine.

**Great idea hon, that will help not only with the weight and toning but also lift your spirits I bet. :)

>>No diets are in my future, but how can I eat in moderation? I don't eat that bad most of the time but I just eat large portions.

**humm, some I can think of that have worked for me...

Cut back a spoonful or a bite every few days. If you usually eat 2 cookies, cut to 1 and 1/2 and then one.

Drinking water before your meals/snacks can help.

Eat slowly and savor what you do eat. :) I heard somewhere that it takes awhile for your brain to start registering that the tummy is full?

Find a normal sized dinner plate (about 9") and fill 1/2 of it with produce (fruits/veggies), 1/4 with carbs and 1/4th with protein-meat, chicken, or fish.

Or perhaps some of the frozen meals already measured out could help?

I'm sure others will have some ideas. :)

You'll get those 5 lbs off. :) Why not come post what and how you do daily under exercise and more? Just writing it down can give a reality check I think. :)

Good luck hon and here's to balanced healthier eating! :)

Hope we see you soon. :)

Hi Nmnh --

I'm Yogi, don't know if you've met me or not. I'm in and out of here, but am pretty loyal :)

I think you are doing the right thing reaching out! Can you talk to the other people at Curves too? I don't know of many people that don't have the same or similar challenges ;)

I LOVE ice cream. But too much and I'm feeling bad and guilty and all that.

When the kids want ice cream, we go out and get it. A McDonanald's cone, a Jiffy Treat, or I guess Dairy Queen is more well known. Make it an event. You might think it costs more that way but the savings in sanity and money are better when you consider you might go out special once in a while versus the cost of going to the store a lot. The former could actually be cheaper. And more fun.

I love fried food, hate to admit it. BUT. It's okay to have less of that and more veggies that you like. Much like Golly says, fill a plate with more, colorful veggies and fruits, cooked or raw, and less of the other stuff. Go ahead, have a full plate! It might work.

Stel's idea of the smaller plate works too. It must have helped many to be such a popular idea. It's really a matter of personal preference and finding what works for you.

And the ladies here give themselves a day off every once in a while to have what they want, how they like it, kind of sticking their tongues out at the whole nagging topic. You know?

I've come back to edit before I post: I think humor is essential. For a lot of things in life. It gives me perspective, and relieves stress, when I remember to laugh. The ladies here can be hysterically funny! They help me remember to do that!

What a big amount of new stresses, positive and maybe not so positive, like the weight, you must be facing in your new life being married! I think you might be able to celebrate some of those as you deal with the weight issue. I bet Las Vegas was fun!

Good luck, come back to share, whatever it is, because it helps us just like it helps you!

Love,

Yogi

You know Yogi, I adopted your ice cream philosophy with my out-of-control coffee habit! And it works.... I was drinking 4-6 cups of coffee a day, as we have free coffee here at work. And I was hooked and miserable every weekend until I got my coffee. And then my SO told me he didn't think I could give up drinking coffee, it must be my crutch, so right there I quit coffee *cold turkey* for 365 days. After my year was up (and I'd had a turtle mocha on New Year's Day), I decided, since coffee was still free at work, that I was ONLY allowed to drink expensive coffee. No more free coffee, no fast food coffee, only fancy coffee-shop coffee or after-dinner coffee. And now I drink about one cup a week, as a special treat. But I'm not hooked on caffeine anymore, which is so much better for my body and not hard on my wallet either. I think twice before I just go for a cup of coffee--there's a tangible incentive not to.

It's a great idea!

My ice cream tactic: Buy single-portion things at the store, like ice cream sandwiches, ice cream cups, etc. and then I can eat ONE when I want one.

Two large glasses of water before you start your meal often helps.

Stel is right, I cannot believe how much food they put on your plates over there. Filling a doggy bag before you start is a good idea! Hilary

Boy, Starbucks must LOVE you!

Ummm, that doesn't work for me, unless the guys dive into them too. Because, (blushing), I'll eat the whole box LOL
