In my attempts to lose weight and regularly flush my body of excess sodium, I drink over 100oz. of water per day. Can a person drink too much water?

Hi again :)

>>In my attempts to lose weight and regularly flush my body of excess sodium, I drink over 100oz. of water per day. Can a person drink too much water?

**I guess such a thing is possible newlymarried. I imagine it would depend on a person's size, how active they are, how hot the weather etc. I think they said our guys in Iraq had to drink 8 quarts of water a day to stay hydrated. I'm relatively small(5'2") and find 64-66% is about my limit.

Maybe someone else will have some good input on this. :)

I remember hearing somewhere that there is a limit to how much water a person should drink, because you could start flushing out important nutrients in your body not found in water...I dunno...I never really paid attention to it because even my doctor says to drink as much water as possible. When I got to over 2 gallons a day...that was when I cut back a bit...I was peeing like every 5 minutes!!! LOL

I don't really think you can drink too much water. If you don't have any underlying disease that is causing your "thirst" then your body will expel excess water and there should be no fluid retention. I went to Yahoo and put in "drinking too much water" and was very interested in a lot of the information provided. I would often drink 100 oz in a day especially in summer or on a day when I do a lot of cardio in the gym. Hilary

**Hi there again ..

Good to see you back here :)

Sounds like you do drink lots of water, whew!

I actually have heard it is possible to drink too much water ..

However it does depend on your weight and height ..

I wish I could remember the *numbers*

On how to figure out how much to drink for your weight ..

If in doubt you could always ask your doctor and see what they might say and suggest ..

Let us know what you find out ..

Sorry if I was not much help ..

Hope to see you again :)

If you've just run a marathon, yes, drinking too much water could be a problem, as after that much exertion you'd need to replace your electrolytes (sodium, potassium, etc.) for proper muscle function. For most of us though, who are not running marathons and who are not exercising vigorously for more than a couple hours at a time without refueling, I'm pretty sure we can drink as much water as we want. ;)

YES, you can drink too much water! I know personally that you can. I used to drink way too many liquids and my sodium became dangerously low. Too much water means too little electrolytes, and they cannot keep up with production.

Then I had the problem of too little water, and I am looking for my personal balance. I doubt that 100 oz. a day would hurt you. I was drinking way more than that, mostly fin the form of diet sodas and coffee, decaf and regular. VERY unhealthy!!! I am working on it! Moderating those liquids and drinking my hopefully at least 64 oz. of water, which means replenishing often for me, so I try (workingon it,guys!) to carry water with me everywhere I go, or check up on the nearest drinking fountain.

Always, if you have questions of this nature, my opinion is that you should talk to your doctor. Especially if you have other health concerns.

Nice to 'see' you, Nmnh

Actually in some cases if you already have a weakened de-tox system in your body, too much "flushing" can put strain on your kidneys. I'd speak to your doctor about the amount you're taking in.

I found something in print! http://www.hhp.ufl.edu/keepingfit/ARTICLE/toomuchwater.htm

The general rule of thumb for water drinking, or so I hear, is to take your body weight in pounds and divide it in half and that's the number of ounces of water per day, plus I think 8 ounces for every 15 min or half hour of exercise. For example, if you weighed 130 pounds, you'd need to drink 65 ounces of water, plus whatever you needed for exercise.

Interesting question and looks like it brought out some interesting answers newlymarried. :)

Hey gang, thanks for all the input! For me it just seems to reinforce listening to our own individual bodies and what we're doing and keeping things in balance and moderation.
