Is it a sprain, fracture, or what?!

HELP! A week and a half ago I hurt my right ankle. I sprained an ankle (right one) for the first time a year ago, but it didn't act like this!

I am fine, I can walk on it, even stomp on it! But, if I bend it wrong, it's excruciating. It's still swollen (not too too swollen, but I can feel it deep inside). Now there is something sticking out of my arch (just a little bit, a bump), and the top of my foot hurts (at the crease of my foot to shin), and is swollen and hurts to the touch.

I heard that a fracture can feel the same and act the same as a sprain. The bump and pain in the top of my foot is concerning me. But, unfortunately, I just started my own business not too long ago and do not have health insurance yet! A family member is in the health field, but lives a few states away!

Can anyone give me any idea as to what is going on with my ankle?

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Ski season is coming up!

Hi dzyne and welcome :)

So sorry to hear about your ankle hon. Afraid I am not going to be much help.

Hopefully others will have a better idea of what's going on .. So check back ..

One thing I would suggest would be to get it checked out by a doctor soon ..

They can let you know what's going on and how to take care of it properly ..

Good luck and let us know ..

Hope to see you here again soon :)

Hi dzyne,

Welcome to the board. Sure sorry to hear about your foot. It sounds very painful when you move it certain ways. Have you been keeping it wrapped (like with an ace bandage or athletic taping to help prevent painful movement and if so has it helped? Do you feel it was caused by exercise?

Just my 2 cents but if you fear you might have a stress fracture, seeing a Dr. in the early stages might prevent a long recovery time so that you can do that skiing. The Dr. might suggest a boot, taping or an orthotic to help it heal as quickly as it can and also relieve your mind if it just needs time to heal.

Meanwhile, perhaps someone here has had a similar experience and can share so you might keep checking back. I sure hope it feels better soon.

I'm afraid you're going to have to suck it up and see a doctor! That's the only way to get a real diagnosis and suggestions for treatment, and the longer you let it go, the higher your risk of complications from improper healing. If it's been a week and a half and it still hurts and has a bump, I'd wager that something is still very not right. A regular doctor's visit without insurance is $50-$60, plus whatever other stuff is needed, like an x-ray, crutches, etc., but you have to ask yourself what your future health and mobility are worth to you in a dollar figure. How much is skiing worth to you? Walking without pain?

If it were me, and being fit is my life, I wouldn't hesitate to get it looked at. I can always earn more money, but my mobility is priceless to me, and once it's gone, it's gone.

Good luck! Sorry I don't have better news...
