Turned it over with a stick, and there was no evidence of trauma.
I put it on a sack, and brought it closer to the house...ants were
forming around the poor guy. I sure hope he's not the one that always
came to our feeder we have outside our den windows, as there's always
seemed to be JUST one(:
Anyway, don't guess I've ever seen one close up. The feathers are
absolutely gorgeous. I was curious as to how to get the feathers off
to keep. Don't ask me what I was going to do with them...haven't the
foggiest.
Called our local Wildlife Refuge Center, and first they said he might
have died from West Nile...but not to worry...only contagious from mosquitos.
Guess she thought that was the reason for my call. When I asked about the
feathers, she quickly said "No! They are protected under the International
Something", as are nests, etc. I said "Even if he's dead?", and she said yes.
She said its illegal.
My question to you folks is...1. do you know how to remove the feathers?
2. do they stay 'preserved', or are you supposed to do 'something'? and
3. am I a terrible person to break this law?
Any quick responses will be appreciated. Don't guess I can keep him
around the house too much longer...getting hot out.

Stel - I think it was great that you moved the poor baby from the ants...but, Honestly, just my opinion,
Stel

I'll ask dh when he gets up 'cause he was born and raised on a chicken farm and he might know something like that Hilary
