The headlines of late haven't been exactly uplifting (banks, bankruptcy, buzzkill!), but if you can look beyond the barrage of financial information, there has been some groundbreaking research on the diet and fitness front. So take a break from watching the zigzag of the stock market and check out these interesting items, each of which can help you stay healthy—in good times and bad.

Believe to achieve

Your mind is the best tool to get in shape, according to a study in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine. While greater access to treadmills boosted people's odds of exercising by 24 percent, those who believed in their ability to succeed increased their chances by 139 percent! To bolster can-do confidence, set specific, short-term, measurable goals.

Go to the dark side

Chocolate that's at least 70 percent cacao can satisfy you, according to research from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. When people were served pizza after chocolate, those who dug into dark ate 15 percent less than milk chocolate eaters did.

Speed your way to flat abs

Quickening your workout pace can slim your midsection, according to research from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Women who added three 20-minute high-intensity jogs or walks to their weekly walking routine shed an average of 2 inches from their waist over four months, whereas those who stuck with less intense strolls dropped only half an inch. Scientists say stepping up your sessions may release more growth hormones, which help your body burn fat faster. Even if you don't want to hoof it, you can sub any vigorous activity you like to help flatten your middle in a flash.

Nosh on nuts

People who incorporated nuts into their diet had a smaller waist a year later than people who added olive oil or cut total fat, a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine reveals. Antioxidants, healthy fats and fiber in walnuts and other healthy nuts may beat belly buildup; include a daily handful in a balanced menu.

Sweat before you sup

If you're planning to dig into a decadent dinner, head for the gym beforehand! Cardio stints before high-cal meals can fend off fat, researchers from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor report. Women who worked out before indulging increased their fat-burning rate, and those who pigged out without exercising decreased theirs. For best results, make your session moderately intense, researchers say.

Have family meals

Moms are more likely to consume fruits and veggies during a routine dinner with the kids than they are during other meals, a study in the journal Appetite finds. Fill half your plate with produce to sneak the most nutrition into supper.

Say cheers to salmon

Wine drinkers who ate the fish had higher amounts of heart-helping omega-3 fatty acids in their bloodstream than did teetotalers and those who chose other types of alcohol, according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Wine's polyphenols may stall the breakdown of good fats, halting the inflammation that leads to heart disease. A glass a day can upgrade a fillet.
