The Bizarro Atkins Diet: The “Eco-Atkins” Diet

Remember The Atkins Diet craze? People just couldn’t believe you could eat so much fat and lose weight. Little did they know they would be increasing their risk of cancer, heart disease, and obesity later on in life—once the diet did its job.

The New York Times reported yesterday that researchers have discovered a new breakthrough diet similar to Atkins, only it keeps up with the eco-friendly trend these days. They’re calling it the “Eco-Atkins” Diet.

This high protein, low carbohydrate diet has one twist: It’s entirely vegan. It has been proven healthy, effective, and significantly helps lower cholesterol. The participants got their protein from vegan foods such as soy, gluten or seitan, nuts and cereals. They also ate fruits and vegetables.

In a small four-week trial that researchers conducted to test the diet, they found that these voluntary dieters saw a drop of 20% in their cholesterol and lost a total of 9 pounds on average. The other dieting group, who were put on a high-carbohydrate, low-fat vegetarian dairy diet, saw a 12% drop in their cholesterol.

With the “veggie day” in Belgium and countless studies on the dangers of meat consumption, meat-free eating plans are becoming more and more attractive.

Just for some comfort, we came up with the top five reasons being a vegetarian wouldn’t be so bad.

It’s cheaper. As we all know, meat can get pricey. Whether in the supermarket or out to eat, fruits, veggies, and soy products will save you a buck here and there.

It’s eco-friendly.
Did you know that producing one pound of beef uses 50 times more water than producing one pound of soybeans?

It expands your palate.
When was the last time you jumped for joy when seeing a roasted eggplant dish with garlic on a menu? By cutting out meat, your taste buds will learn to love simple foods again like fruits and veggies.

It helps you lose weight.
When done right, that is. If you decide to cut out meat and load up the carbs, you won’t see yourself becoming healthier. However, if you replace the meat with other healthy proteins like soy, tempeh, and beans, you’ll most likely reach your goals with more success.

It gives you more energy. Ever feel sluggish and tired after a giant cheeseburger? Try replacing it with a giant veggie sandwich on whole wheat bread. You’ll feel charged and ready to dance the night away with the girls.

Interesting to read this Liz. My neighbors are on the Atkins diet. They do not look like they lost weight with the diet though. Oh well ...we are all doing different things. I will stick with this Fitness and Health and do it the right way by the portions, healthy meals and workouts.

Most of the people I know that truly followed Atkins (like got the books, learned the ropes, followed it to the letter) did lose lots of weight initially.

It is true that we all must find what works for us.
And BORING is right - with so many food choices out there
we need to be a little adventurous and try as many as we can.

You are stronger than I am Hugs,
I never even thought about going on Atkins
I love my veggies to much.
Moderation is the key -
Life's to short to eliminate whole food groups :)

I think the only things that work for most people are exercise and eating in moderation.
