Our beaches are not too far away either about about 40 to 60 minutes. Okay with traffic 60 minutes or so.
Our coastal waters are cold even in summer.

Our coastal waters aren't particularily warm 'cos we're very close to the Atlantic Ocean, so nothing like Durban where it's all Indian Ocean.
It has to be a really warm day for me to venture into the water, though it's nothing as cold as where BIL & SIL live in Cape Town, where it's pure Atlantic Ocean & feels like water out of a fridge & hurts your feet even in mid-summer (never been in deeper than ankle deep)...

Your coast waters are very similar to ours in temps.
When we go to the beach, we just go to wade in a bit to let the waves hit
our feet. When we look for things among the rocks, the occasional wave
does splash us, too.
