The 5 Secrets to Portion Control

Can you have too much of a good thing? Well, yes, if we're talking tasty foods. Often, it's more important that you pay attention to portion size than deny yourself the foods you crave. So, here are the five secrets to making portion control easy.

• Don't store leftovers in one large container; store them in smaller, portion-sized containers. That way, you'll eat a reasonable amount, and you'll have a no-prep, microwave-ready meal the next time you get hungry.

• Cut recipes in half. Recipes are often written for a family of four, so there's no need to follow the recipe as it is written if you're cooking dinner for two.

• If your favorite restaurant serves really big portions, go halfsies with a friend. You can still enjoy the food you love, but you'll leave the restaurant without that overfull feeling.

• Order off the kids' menu. The extra bonus: You'll save yourself some cash in the process.

• Be smart. If you happen to crave pommes gratin, indulge. Just make it a smaller side portion and not the main dish. Also, you can start with a salad and fill up on leafy greens before facing your food weaknesses. You'll be less likely to eat as much.

The problem with ordering off a kids' menu is that kids' menus at most restaurants are unhealthy - chicken fingers, burgers, fries, hot dogs, spaghetti & meatballs, etc.

Hadn't thought of that either Ludam,
Guess I won't anytime soon
Absolutely know what you mean about when it's in front of us ::blush::
Don't think many restaurants would 1/2 it beforehand ..
Although I have been known to ask for half portions.
Appreciate your great ideas .. thank you :)

Most places do give you the half portion when asked,
It does cost less but not quite the hald like it should, LOL
However your idea of using them for LO's is even better :)

Interesting to read Liz. I did some of the ideas on my road trip at the restaurants....sharing sandwiches
and boxing leftovers.

I drink my water before my meal so it helps a lot for me.

Before reading this article
It never occured to me to wrap leftovers in individual portions.

I really liked that idea too.

The kids menus are cool
I'm really liking most places have a fruit or veggie alternative to fries
Some offer goldfish crackers instead of fries.
Some good choices if you look hard enough.

Drinking water works wonders for me before snacks.

More often than not I'm thirsty, not hungry.
