The 5 Secrets to Portion Control
Can you have too much of a good thing? Well, yes, if we're talking tasty foods. Often, it's more important that you pay attention to portion size than deny yourself the foods you crave. So, here are the five secrets to making portion control easy.
• Don't store leftovers in one large container; store them in smaller, portion-sized containers. That way, you'll eat a reasonable amount, and you'll have a no-prep, microwave-ready meal the next time you get hungry.
• Cut recipes in half. Recipes are often written for a family of four, so there's no need to follow the recipe as it is written if you're cooking dinner for two.
• If your favorite restaurant serves really big portions, go halfsies with a friend. You can still enjoy the food you love, but you'll leave the restaurant without that overfull feeling.
• Order off the kids' menu. The extra bonus: You'll save yourself some cash in the process.
• Be smart. If you happen to crave pommes gratin, indulge. Just make it a smaller side portion and not the main dish. Also, you can start with a salad and fill up on leafy greens before facing your food weaknesses. You'll be less likely to eat as much.

I've heard of asking for half your meal served in a doggy bag,
But never tried it.... may have to once just to see how it works.
I like the idea of eating your appetizer/soup/salad
Before ordering - I find myself stuffed by the time dinner is served
then eating anyway just because it's there.
I also order appetizers to be served with everyone's main course.
I love steamed mussels and after a dinner salad they are more than enough.
DH doesn't like it when I do that - no LO for him to take home LOL
My 11 yo and I share almost every meal when we travel
She picks at everything so doesn't need much.
And once it's off my plate I won't eat it.
Works very well.
I'm trying to drink more water before meals,
not seeming to make much of a difference,
But I'm still working on it.
The water does stop me from snacking more though,
Most times I am thirsty not really hungry when I wander into the kitchen
looking for "something"
I've never asked for 1/2 my meal in a doggie bag, either, but read the suggestion in a few articles.
Hmmm...What works for some of us, may not work for others. Guess that is why are doing different workouts Liz.
So interesting.
• Don't store leftovers in one large container; store them in smaller, portion-sized containers. Not necessary for me for I always cook enough for left overs and just the right amount for healthy portion sizes and never take too much..and am taking even less lately.
• Cut recipes in half. I'm allergic to recipes. ;)
• If your favorite restaurant serves really big portions, go halfsies with a friend. I wish I could, but DH and I always seem to not want the same things in restaurants. I do bring half of mine home for lunch the next day though.
• Order off the kids' menu. I didn't know you could do that. Kids menu choices are usually not healthy though, so I wouldn't want them anyway.
• Be smart. I am and I'm getting even
Good for you!
Hopefully some of the rest of us will learn the ropes soon!
