I measure progress without the scale by...

  • How my clothes fit
  • Using other numbers (body fat, BP, etc.)
  • Monitoring my energy levels
  • Assessing my emotions & self-esteem
  • None of these- I only use the scale
  • Other .. please share

I'd say a bit of everything, although I can't usually go by self-esteem, I don't know if I'd ever be confident enough to think I made progress:-).

I voted other. Comparing to when I first started, my energy is a lot better, I can walk hilly streets for a couple hours without huffing and puffing like I used to. I do not smoke so the huffing was from being really out of shape at the beginning. My self esteem seems better along with emotions...I do not give up.

Hi Hugs!

I get excited when my clothes start fitting better or get too big. It's a big incentive to keep doing what I'm doing. When DH really retires and we start traveling all the time, I might even get slim again. We came back from that 2 1/2 months of camping and I was 2 sizes smaller! All that hiking and healthy food did wonders. Then I came back to the end of winter in Michigan and put it all back on. Sigh! It's really, really hard to stay active here. It's either too hot and humid or just mindbogglingly cold. DH and I sat down and figured it out once and we only have 6 or 7 weeks of really nice weather that makes you want to get outside.

Look at all the progress you have made Aileen,
Wow that is just terrific!
The not wearing the elastic pants to me is huge!
As well as having more enrgy & feeling better of course :)

Hey Bev,
Yes those smaller clothes is definitely a huge incentive ..
What about a dreadmill for your house ?
Or even a stationery bike ?
Then you can do the workouts inside .. no exucses that way
Or renting some videos/DVD's from the library ?
That might help too :)

Yep Hugs good changes and it is not going to be a temporary thing for me.
I know I cannot believe I wore those pants for many years and now I switched to the
snaps and buttons.

Once we are empty nesters for real, I plan on a Nordic Trak for the basement family room. No room until then, the family room is our oldest DS's domain. I've got a Richard Simmons tape and a tai chi tape that I use in the winter time for variation. I'm going to add a beginning Pilates tape to the repertoire this fall. You are right about finding excuses though. I'm good at that.

Sigh!

Just wanted to say I LOLed at 'dreadmill'! And I'm making progress for sure, almost to my goal, can't complain, but I've always had a bit of a self-confidence problem, so I rely more on the other methods to keep myself in check for sure.
