Cooking A Pot Of Navy Beans - Need Input

I'm cooking myself a pot of navy beans and I need some help. My mom would always flavor our beans with some ham bones or bacon or such. I don't have any, plus I would like to flavor it without fat, if possible. I added some onions and some garlic powder. I'm thinking about dumping a can of mixed vegetables in but I'm not sure how that would taste with navy beans. I've just never eaten them that way before. (I'm trying to get more protein and fiber and thought this might be a good way.) The way I've eaten them in the past is flavored with pork and drowned in cornbread topped with butter! That isn't going to work anymore! LOL I'm also planning on adding some pearled barley to it.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions and if you think adding the mixed vegetables would taste good or not.

sounds like you have the makings of mushroom barley soup - I add navy beans to mine.
Ok. I'm on the right track, then. I'm not a big fan of the canned veges either but they were given to us and its what I have so I added those. I also added some beef bullion and celery seed for flavor (no fresh of either).
Thanks for the suggestions. If anybody else has anything to add, I would love to hear it. I'm trying to expand my taste buds on a budget.
Looks like Ludam gave you some great tips - I've never made them so I don't think I am much help - sorry!
Do let us know what you do and how they come out though!
