Back at the beginning of the summer I noticed some large bruises on Jake in places I wouldn't normally expect to see them so I took him into the ped.

Hi Cathy-

First (((HUGS)). I cannot imagine how scared you must be. It sucks that you have to wait so long for an appointment. Did your ped give you any ideas what it could be or what they will be looking at/ruling out a the pediatric hematologist?

I don't know anything about this specific issue, but I wanted to share what I went through, and maybe it will give you peace of mind. Prior to IVF, I had to go through all of the bloodwork, and my doctor called and wanted me to see a hematologist for a possible clotting issue. He said something in my bloodwork looked a "little off" and wanted me to check it out further before he would do IVF.

So, I went to a hematologist, and they looked at my bloodwork. They really couldn't figure out why my doctor had sent me there. The "off" levels he sent me for they looked fine to them. But, they had me to more bloodwork and a bleeding test. Both came back fine and I never had to see them again.

So, I learned that a referral often is a CYA or something that is done (thankfully) when doctors don't know as much about an issue as they would like to. I hope that is the case for little Jake. Please keep

Stefanie - thank you! I am glad you had a good outcome to additional testing and hope that we have the same here. The ped told me not to lose sleep over this - that we're not looking at a life threatening situation. However, easier said than done!!

I am trying not to get freaked out until we see the specialist which is why I'm steering clear of google for now!

thanks again,
Cathy

Caren - thanks so much for this. The ped did try to explain something similar but by that point I had shut down and wasn't hearing him anymore - it's very helpful to be able to read your explanation with a clearer head!

It's interesting that you mention stress. It took them 3 sticks to get a vein and he was freaking out the whole time - I wonder if that could be at play here. I'm not looking forward to having his blood drawn again but hopefully they will do it right there in the office and know what they are doing to minimize trauma for him.

I know we need to know more - it's just so frustrating that it's going to take so long to get in...

Thanks again,
Cathy

Cathy -

I know that the bloodwork experience wasn't good, but I'm wondering if you should ask your pediatrician to have the bloodwork done again.

The first thing the specialist is going to want to do is bloodwork. One data point isn't enough to see if there is a pattern,

Hi Cathy-

Sounds like an emotionally exhausting today. ((hugs)) to you for getting through it alone with out DH there.

I am still keeping my fingers crossed that the bloodwork comes back OK, and that your ped was being

Cathy -

I missed your update before. Sorry to hear how difficult it was. The waiting isn't much fun either, but hopefully you will have more information at the next appointment. Glad to hear your DH is going to be able to go with you.
