You are not the first, nor will you be the last strong woman to be thought a dyke.

>>>I know I have it because word is the faculty have been rumoring about me and my sexuality (they don't have enough to do).<<<

LOL! The other day, one of the sales ppl came into the business office and started a discussion about his wife. Apparently she is a *hottie* who keeps him on his toes. I was not paying attention to the discussion between him and the other women until the middle of it. I asked him something about her, trying to catch up on the conversation. My office manager blurted out "hey we need to hook her up with Beth". Most of the other women giggled uncontrollably, and the salesman's face turned beet red. This was the first time I realized that I was a topic of discussion in our rumor mill.

I hope you get that chance... I've no doubt you are more than capable. We're rooting you on! As stated in my other post, what you are doing now does much to change things. Yeah, people don't know, but they speculate, and one day they will know... they will then associate that with this very professional and nice person. It doesn't take long for the old attitudes to start to shatter.

I've mentioned it before, but it is a short and worthy read "You're not from around here, are you?" by Louise Blum is about her and her partner's life in a small town, centering on their decision to parent. Though you are already a parent, the other aspects of the story, an educator in a small town (southernwester PA as I recall -just checked... Mansfield University) dealing with their attitudes towards her and her partner you might find interesting and relevant. Her view was similar, positives of being there outweighed the negatives.

You are one patient person to deal with such a parade of introductions!

rofl, isn't it? The sad part is in the early 1930's a lot of women lost positions at women's colleges because of the move toward viewing us as "abnormal." They feared we were corrupting young women.
