I'm straight but I have a question about homosexual life. The other night just for fun I was browsing the gay personals over on yahoo and as I was reading them I noticed them saying that they were a bottom looking for a top or they were a top looking for a bottom. What does that mean?

That's what I thought but still I'm confused. If you both have the SAME sexual parts then why does it matter who gives and who recieves? I just don't get that. WHY does it matter?

Wouldn't that also be true for straight couples? I would think so. I need to go check out these personal ads...Sandra

I think it is a reference for how you like things... are you more often a "giver" (top) or are you predominantly a "receiver" (bottom)?

Hi Laura!

Great answers so far. In general:

Top = leader = giver = aggressor (in a very positive way) = butch.

Bottom = follower = receiver = passive (in a very positive way) = femme.

These aren't always directly correlated, but more often than not, they are. Sometimes you have a person who has qualities from each. But in general, you will see it play out like that. This isn't really a bedroom reference, its more of just a life/relationship in general thing. Top v. Bottom has very little to do with actual sexual position, except that usually each partner will have their preferred place. This doesn't mean that position doesn't change or that both partners can't equally enjoy both positions, its just that often times they will have a *standard* position.
