Any career suggestions?

As some of you know, I'm an English teacher. After a couple of years with health ups and downs and a really unsupportive school, I'm feeling at a loss as to what to do to change things for myself. I'm thinking that teaching in a high school just ain't a good long term propect for my health...problem is, I just don't know what else I could do.

I have a 1st Class Honours degree and a Masters in English. Over 9 years teaching experience under my belt now.

Anyone have any ideas what kind of employer might want someone like me?

Hi Loubie,

I know you could probably get some good editing jobs or writing jobs with newspapers, Magazines, or Television.

I know the editors at the papers I have written for get a lot of work. We write the articals, and the editors make them and us look good.

Also I am sure you could get a good job as a proof reader for many things like I mentioned above.

Businesses also need writers and proof readers for the reports etc, and they always want someone with a degree in english.

I think there would be plenty of avenues open to you.

Good Luck, I hope you can move on to something more pleasant for you.

Hugs,

Laurie

Have you looked into non-profit? They are always looking for English majors to read proposals and write grants.

Lou, I have made quite a few bucks as a grant writer. Its nice too because you set your own hours. As long as you meet the deadlines, it's very flexible. Don't take on small grants, they are just as much work and if you charge a percentage of the grant as your fee, you don't make as much off the little ones. (Require a retainer fee, for income you can count on when there's noting to write, which rarely happens) Other ways you can work from home is write short stories and submit to magazines and newspapers, edit, transcribe, and in your spare time - start a book of your own. You can even self publish online....so many options. OK, well, I have lots of catching up to do here on the board, I know these wise women are giving you great advice...I am sorry that you are unhappy teaching. Hugs, Sandra

That's a good idea Pam. Lou, if you are going to transcribe or index, it might be good to take a class on medical terminology, and even anatomy/physiology. I did it - and it paid off. That way you will understand the words you are hearing, or at least will have heard them before. Best wishes - Sandra

Sorry it's taken me a bit to post back here, ladies. I hope you don't think me ungrateful - far from it. I really appreciate your suggestions. I had considered the proofreading option - and am, in fact, about half way through writing a teenage fiction novel. But I need to get my ass in gear and get it finished...hard when you have to work so many hours just to keep on top of the teaching though.

Anyway, I am definitely going to look into some of your suggestions - I hadn't thought about the technical writing or the grant writing options - sounds like
