The ill informed of GA have voted to amend the constitution to only allow marriage between a man and a woman.

For the first time in history, the constitution is being used to RESTRICT rights as opposed to PROTECT them.

Next thing you know they will tell this atheist that she has to attend church.

If I was a terrier I would bite some ankles.

Hey Lucky, good to see you again. ~sigh~ Well, at least your state wasn't the only stupid state. It joined 10 others, including my home state. Don't people understand how bad it is to amend the Constitution to take away rights??? It should be used tp provide rights, not to take them away. ~sigh~ Thanks for your support.

Hugs!

I had an eye opening experience. I was talking with my "so called liberal" friend and she voted FOR it! I was shocked. I asked why and she said, "Well, a marriage should be between a man and a woman." I told her that is NOT what the amendment is really about. Even if marriage between same sex partners isn't recognized now, a progressive society might change in time. Now there is no hope at all. And the bible should stay out of the Constitution in first place.

After much "talking" about this she realized maybe she made a mistake and read it wrong. I agreed that her bible (I'm an atheist) says marriage is between m and f but I argued that she shouldn't assume everyone will follow it. I told her it's not her job to decided who should marry whom. Leave that up to the individual and their parter and God (if they have one.) Thank god I got through to her. I am still fuming. (And thank god we didn't get into an arument about the legality of poligimy. That't another gray area for me. Consenting adults....blah, blah, blah......)

Next, my rights to NOT attend church will come under fire.

I am still depressed over the whole thing. I feel a little estranged from my country right now.

Sheesh, didn't think you'd get such a rant, did you?

Well, dh promised to fix me a very stong martini tonight.....while it's still legal.

I fear you are not alone in feeling somewhat estranged from your country today.

Thanks, Pam.

Please find that quote for me.

I saw a funny quote the other day. Might have been on this board.

"If only ignorance was painful"

Poem by Martin Niemöller that was said to have been written in 1946.

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist;

Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist;

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist;

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew;

Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me.

This is (I believe) the original quote: (edited cause I borrowed from Pam - she had the full version :) )

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist;

Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist;

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist;

Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me.

There is a contemporary version, have no idea who it is by - not the original author, that I really like. It seems especially fitting here. :
