Wow, can't wait to see the commercial. The United Church of Christ, as far as I understand, is a very different church with a different belief system than The Unitarian Universalist church - right? I am suprised that a Church of Christ, who doesn't even allow females to speak or serve at church, would even be supportive of this new policy. Obviously I don't have my facts straight, this confuses me. Hmmmm? Sandra

Actually...United Church of Christ includes Congregationalists who allow woman as head ministers and leaders and have no problem with their ministers being gay/lesbian s out of the closet

Wow, thanks for the clarification. I mixed them up with some other Church of Christ, there are 3 of them here where I live. They don't let women even pass the collection basket here! Seriously, they can't speak either. Sandra

here is a snippet from my ex-chuches web page......

"This is who the United Church of Christ is: the oldest and largest Protestant denomination in Connecticut, with at least one church in nearly every town. We are the people who ordained the first African American (Rev. Lemuel Haynes, Torrington, 1785), the first woman (1853), and the first openly gay minister (1972). We are the people who befriended and defended the captives of the Amistad (1839), and started 700 schools and colleges for the education of newly freed slaves immediately following the Civil War. We founded (1970) and continue to support the largest nonprofit affordable housing corporation in Connecticut, New Samaritan Corporation. We have always been a people of energetic diversity in our backgrounds and theological positions, and a people who come early to advocacy for justice and peace concerns that others might not see so clearly in the same time period.

I think it will be a great thing if denomination is pitted against denomination on the issue of gay acceptance.

Thanks so much, Soozi. I am really glad to see that there is another denomination out there practicing what I consider Christianity to be all about--acceptance, loving thy neighbor as thy self, etc.

I agree. As more of these types of stories appear in the media, the non-accepting denominations will have less ground to stand on and will hopefully be held accountable for their intolerance.
